Is there a way to figure out what products and brands were shipped with this specific hdd? I've had no luck so far. It's a pretty old disk, probably mid 2000's. If anybody could at least specify what brands used to ship with Hitachi drives in general, that'd be very helpful!

Thanks!

What is your end goal in knowing this information? More than likely you will never have a complete answer unless Hitachi (or parent company) will open up the books or have an inside informer. Doubt either could come true.

I have a Toshiba laptop and I am trying to figure out if the Hitachi is the original hdd that came with it. (End goal is trying to find out if I was tricked by somebody, but that story is long and boring haha)

I guess knowing whether or not Hitachi HDDs shipped with Toshiba laptops at one point would help. Any idea?

Sometimes the HDD manufacturers produce special firmware versions for their OEMs. What does your drive report? You could use a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo.

Compare the manufacture date of the laptop against the date on the HDD's label. If you can't find the dates, then post the part markings of the chips on the laptop motherboard and HDD PCB. These will usually have YWW or YYWW (Year / Week) date codes. For example, if the dates are 1 year apart, then this would raise a red flag.

It says the firmware is BBCOC33P

I'm looking at the label, and the only date I see on it is right by a warranty warning, so I'm not really sure if it is a the manufacture date or the date the warranty ends.

There's also a Date code on the label: J8070 ... not sure what that means.

Do I have to open the hdd case to get to HDD PCB?

Well, here's someone with a nearly identical drive and it came from a Toshiba laptop accd to the post: http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/ ... 99105.html

So I'd say there's a good chance it's the original drive.

Oh, thats interesting!

Isn't it a bit weird that Toshiba (which I believe was making hard drives for almost a decade, could be wrong though) would use Hitachi drives in their products? Or was that normal practice?

If I could find a manufacture date for my hdd, that'd let me know for sure.

My Google searches would suggest that the serial number reported by the drive in response to an ATA Identify Device command (using CrystalDiskInfo or other tools) is coded as follows:

    date (YYMMDD) + HDA barcode (6 characters) + serial number (8 characters)

    YY = year of manufacture
    MM = month of manufacture
    DD = day of month

Examples:

    071205 BB0C00 WGHMW82C
    080601 BB6300 ACJDX9MG
    070926 BB0C00 WGGA1UVC
    080102 BB0C00 WGJ7TJPC
    071108 BB0C00 WGH1D67C
    091024 PBG206 1SCGT5XV - HTS545025B9A300
    080903 BB6300 HCGKD53F

Here is another Toshiba laptop with a Hitachi HTS542516K9SA00:

http://data.idnes.cz/soubory/vyrobci/A0 ... OSHIBA.TXT

    TOSHIBA Satellite A300
    Drive Model: Hitachi HTS542516K9SA00
    Drive Revision: BBCOC33P
    Drive Serial Number: 080601BB6300ACJDX9MG

Yup, so it appears it is most likely the original hdd.

Here is a pic of the hdd; http://imgur.com/CMCZOXA

See that date "02JUN08"?

Is that the manufacture date, the date the warranty ends/ was issued, or something else?

My bad

Yeah, it was 080602 after checking with CrystalDiskInfo, so that answers that. Thanks for your help.
