Can I solve this problem by swapping the heads?

Or something on the PCB ?

Fail servo op = bad heads. You need to swap heads.

Almost certainly media damage too. Nearly every clicking drive of this model I've seen has at least one dirty head and media damage to that platter.

Sadly, you have ZERO chance of recovering yourself :-(

Definitely is not the model you want to attempt your first head replacement on. Even if you manage to swap the heads without killing them (0.1% chance), there's about a 99% chance you'll need to modify the firmware to disable features like the media cache and auto-reallocation functions just to get the drive stable. Then you'll need a professional imaging tool like PC-3000 or DeepSpar Disk Imager 4 to safely extract the data. Otherwise you'll just kill the new heads fast.

If the data is worth $700-800, have a professional do it for you. Our price here for those cases is $650 plus the cost of a donor drive, just to give you a baseline.

Is not just for bad heads. Even though we have seen countless amounts of these ST3000DM001 come in with head crashes showing this terminal output. Last week we had one show the same terminal output and it turned out to be a faulty PCB. Just wanted to let the others know that don't always assume this terminal message is heads/surface damage.

Does the drive stay spinning? What noises does it make?

check if PCB is original you need Pc3000 or any Prof. tool which can Read ROM ID (HDD Serial & PCB ID serial are same)if PCB is original most probably Damage Heads with surface damage too……..

heads + media damage. as already mentioned by Pro's you should not attempt it yourself, best chances is to send drive to a decent Pro.

As And As i have started to do more physical work i have started to experience this .But i had a very unique case few days back ,Read rom and program same pcb rom back and voila :mrgreen:
