I have an old WD 500gb hard drive that I used as a system drive. It was freezing up whenever I tried copying files from it so I replaced it.

I am trying to recover video files from it but the transfer rate is slow. When I copy files to it using usb2 the transfer rate is normal but copying files from it the rate is below 1 MB/s.

I originally thought it was a controller issue.

But, why would I be able to copy files to it normally and only see a problem copying files from it?

Probably drive has problem with adaptives. Probably it is hard for drive to read and it is doing many attempts before it can get normal not corrupted data.

I appreciate your suggestions. I don't really need the data so will take less than heroic steps to fix.

Just thought it was weird that copying to the drive works fine but copying from the drive is ridiculously slow. Right now it's copying at 330 KB/s.

it might be due to surface problems. you can write to it at normal speed because drive does not notice it wrote to a bad area. On the other hand when you try to read it spends its time on correcting ecc and retrying sectors...

If it was mobo I would think the behavior would be consistent across drives but it's only this drive. Same with cables...

yeah, it is most probably surface errors, as the drive had problems initially too, that's why the OP started to copy things out of it.
