Hah great feature very useful, but ...... what's happening ??

We all drive cars and accelerate, break and so on - easy...
a book can be written about what's happening inside the engine.

I use Erase Waits to repair drives for in-house use and it works
a treat., but what's happening under the hood ??.

I even have some WD which report SSSSSSSSSSSS IDNF
and Erase waits fixes these - quite quickly I might add.

After the repair of SSSSSS as in above - I note there is no change
in G-List or P-List, mostly.

So could someone please enlighten me - what's happening ??

It is useful for IBM hdd repairing(repair bad sector) i think,if your WD hdd report SSSSSSSS or !!!!!!!!!!,maybe its firmware already BAD.

but I am asking about Erase Waits.

Had asked the same question before, and I was told that ERASE WAITS simply relies on the pool of spare sectors kept by the drive. But when the pool of spare sectors in the G-List becomes depleted, ERASE WAITS can do nothing more.

I've also have some WD that shows olny SSSSSS... Erase waits do nothing to them. Is there any other solution to fix this problem?

SSSSSS in WD usually means F/W problem.

MHDD is not supposed to fix this problem, but I just reported it
for interest sake.

IMHO the function ERASE WAITS from MHDD is similar to ZERO FILL, you can "FIX" the logical BADs that you will find in your disk. This in general.
To handle G- LIST or P-LIST you will need:
To put the disk in Factory Repair Mode. And for this you will need an utility that has the specific ATA command for your disk.

The t13.org is a group of professional from Hard Disks Manufactors that study and this people will say all the rules for the hard disks. This is possible to be checked, since you or people that has interest - just need to go to http://www.t13.org and start to read some docs that are there. Also to uderstand what i'm saying the http://www.ata-atapi.com ( HALE's Website ) has a lot of information that can put all this more clear.
In simple words - for MHDD do this ( pick-up the bads in manager then in the defects list ) with all hard disks models it will need ATA command for all hard disks models from all Manufactors.
So I think that this is not the objetive of the author.

Using MHDD you will see that the utility say that you can see the defect list of IBMs and Fujitsu so in this hard disks ( I think that in some models only ) you can do your test - use to fix some bads and check the list. I do not know if the version 4.0 or even the versions bigger then 2.84 can work with the lists of this hard disks.
To see what the utility can do is only a question of read the doc and to make the tests.

Sometimes I understand that a short answer is very good, also a simple utility that can handle our job is what we need the most.
But I would like to say that has people that born with a natural curiosity and for this kind of people to pick up an util and to do a job without understand what he is doing is not enought, this kind of person need to learn and understand what happens with his actions. Unfortunately this is not the case of the biggest part of people that come here. I can understand but I would like to have a hope that some people will try to learn and will try to improove this job.
