Friends !

when ever it comes to Hitachi drive i feel depressed even before i start troiubleshoot the issue !

i have this HTS54060G9SA00 , which is not spinning .. initial diagnostics of PCB shows nothing unusual , client claims that drive was used in old laptop , never dropped , never anyhting ..

luckly i have an identical donor , but it doesnt spin as well , and its PCB shows nothing important to notice at all ..

i tested the fuse , its OK

please be kind enough to take a look at the PCB and point me in case you have experience with this model ..

thanks in advance

You might have better luck finding a donor if you were to search for the correct model number.

thanks for the reply , both of you ..

finsing a donor is not a big deal , what bothors me , is that both PCBs have the same issue , and i cant troubleshoot any of them ..

Have you put the patient PCB into the donor HDA to see if it spins?
Maybe a bad motor.
You don't ear any sound?

In HITACHI a damaged/corrupted NVRAM will cause the disk to not spin at all.

AFAICT, this is the transistor:

It appears that the DC-DC converter which I assumed was the Vcore supply is in fact a +3.3V Vio supply. Therefore I now suspect that Q401 is the +1.5V Vcore pass transistor. The other +1.5V linear regulator could be involved with the preamp.

In short, ISTM that the 3 supply voltages are probably OK.

If you could upload the NVRAM contents, I could verify the checksum for you.

Could it be a Power Up In Standby (PUIS) issue?

this is what makes sense .. PCB is ok , as both PCBs are giving normal reads .. i couldnt manage to dump the flash , as its pretty (strange ) one , and neither my programmer nor my friend's support it ..
i will manage to look up the ROM and flush to a new flash and entirely replace the current one
just out of curiosity , do you have the rom ? :D

thanks

This article states that each NVRAM is unique to a particular drive:

Hitachi data recovery tips you must know:

http://www.datarecoverytools.co.uk/wp-c ... ure-01.jpg

Furthermore, the NVRAM version needs to match the ROM.

if its a PUIS issue , am afraid i cant handle it .. i dont have proper tools ..

also , i tried another PCB from a trashed HDD , diffirent model number but it fits on the patient .. and the patient spins OK !!

so its either PUIS or corrupted rom

PUIS can be disabled with HDAT2 (freeware). You need to launch HDAT2 with the /W switch to wake up the drive.

    HDAT2 /W
