Hey guys..im new here.. So my 1TB seagate drive which is about 7 years old now lately fails to read data.

In windows the drive is seen and i can browse it and see the files by some folder take forever to open and other work fine after a few seconds.

The drive doesnt make any clicking noises..just doesnt read the data properly.

What i have round is that when it tries to read the data one chip on the pcb get very hot..so hot you cant even touch it.
Its the IC closet to the motor pins

The hdd is a seagate st31000528as
P/n : 9SL154-301
Firmware : cc35

Any ideas on how i can get my data back?

The fact that you can browse some of the data is a good sign. The drive surface is most likely degraded in certain areas, areas which you can't access now. This problem will only get worse though.

If you really value the data I'd say send it in to us (we're in Cape Town) and we can give you a free quotation and assessment. If you're elsewhere in the coutry we can arrange courier collection.

Website link in my signature, let me know if you need any more info.

Hi ..what would the costs be more or less?.

Is there anything else i can try first?
Ive gor an exactly the same drive spare which is working.

What IC is that one closest to the motor power pins? I find that when it reads data that IC gets very hot.

This started happening after a recent power outage during the night.

Certain ICs do get very hot, too hot to touch. If the PCB was the problem then it wouldn't even be spinning up.

The problem is either a host of bad sectors or a failing read/write head.

Swapping the PCB from another drive unfortunately won't help as 1) the PCB isn't the issue and 2) each PCB contains unique info on it that pertains to the drive it was manufactured with.

Our pricing is available there on our website if you want to have a look.

Was just a thought..though the exact other drive ocb doesn't get as hot... Ill connect it again and see what i can transfer before the drive finally dies.

Nothing majorly important but a hasdle to get the files again.

Ill just see if i can copy the most important files off.. The other folders do open eventually just takes a whille so ill just try cloning and see what happens

Try and copy off with 'unstoppable copier' it might work for a drive that still mounts like this.

I'm only suggesting a DIY as you said the data isn't important.

Thanks very much..will try that program and see what happens.. Ive had luck previously whith clonezilla and cloned a similar drive that took about a week to complete.

If that doesnt work ill see if i can send both drives so that it can be recovered onto the working drive

if you AIM for DIY you may try also ddrescue, just make sure you keep your ddrescue logfile on another drive

not sure how it compares with unstoppable copier but i had a lot of success with ddrecue before plus i feel safer using linux tools than windows as it doesnt try to poke in and write to the drive im trying to recover data from

best of luck
