I have two 4 GB Seagate drives that were in my NAS. These are formatted EXT for linux. How can I convert them back to NTFS?

Backstory:
The last Windows 10 update automatically applied on 1/23, trashed my desktop. The C: drive is unrecognizable. I've tried everything I can think of, Dell recovery media, new Windows 10 install, Acronis restore, and the Dell won't recognize a bootable disk. Dell diagnostics says everything is wonderful!

It's like the MBR is gone. I've tried formatting the drive in the Windows install process workflow and I get an error that the SMART functions can't be reached and the install fails. Next I tried using one of the above referenced 4 Gig linux formatted drives, and all my attempts to convert back to NTFS have failed.

I been using a SATA to USB 3 cable to try all this with my laptop. Neither the original HD from the Dell, one of the NAS drive nor a 250 Sandisk Gig SSD are recognized by anything; Disk Management, Paragon extFS or HDDGuru.

I confirmed the cable is OK by using another Samsung Evo 120 GB drive.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks in Advance.

Bob

Is the "SATA to USB 3 cable" powered from an AC adapter, or is it powered from the USB port?

A 3.5" desktop HDD requires both +5V and +12V power. A SATA SSD needs only +5V.

A port powered "SATA to USB 3 cable" can only provide +5V to the attached drive.

Most probably the HDD died (it has already problems) during the update.
I see this many times...
Not a windows update that caused the failure.
