Hi all,

First of all, sorry if my english isn't perfect

Long long time ago, I bought a NAS: DNS-323 and put 2 hard-drives in it: 2 Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 (750Gb)
In that time, these drive have been configured in JBOD mode (99% sure)

Few days ago, one of the 2 drives crashed. My NAS can't detect the broken disk and just ask-me if I want to format the correct one.
Here's a short video of the disk trying to boot. You can hear something wrong...

So I have some questions:
1. Is-It possible to recover datas from the good disk? How would-you do that? Any software you would recomend ?
2. Do-you have any idea what the problem is on the crashed disk? (with the short video)
3. Could I use some part of the good disk to repair the crashed one? Or should I try to swap platters from crashed disk to the good one?

Thanks for your help,
François

Should be possible using software like UFS Explorer. There is chance you may not be able to get file structure though.

This drive is kaput. It has media damage and the surface is FUBAR. I'm sorry to say, it's most likely not-recoverable :(

Even if you were skilled enough to accomplish this (and you're not), it's pointless since the damaged drive has rings on its surface.

drives with rings on surface are often recoverable, at least partially.
The question is how hard we want it.

i can help if you don't mind spending some bucks on it.

pepe, that's true, but listening to the recording, I doubt there is any surface left...

i am not that sure about that. It needs proper evaluation before we can say it is over.

Sounds very nasty to me.

I fully expect to see a thick layer of black dust inside this one, that used to be data :-(

Thanks all for your replies

I'll first try to get as many file as possible from the good disk.
I don't have a desktop computer. I though I could use my western digital external drive case as a way to connect my seagate drive...But no, It doesn't want to boot the hard-drive.
So I'll get a usb sata adapter and try to get my data back.

The broken disk, I'll open It when I get a Torx 6 screwdriver.
I'll post a picture as soon as I open It.

After listening to the video, I am in the 'platter dust' camp.

don't open it up if you want data from it. You can't make it any better but you can make it a lot worse. On the other hand, it is safe if you try it with T6 i think :)

About all these softwares that are doing data recovery:

Isn't It safer to first do a full clone of the disk and then run these softwares on the cloned image?

it is always safer to have 2 copies than one, so yes, of course.
But you can only clone the working one, don't try anything with the bad one. I might be able to get something off the bad one if needed, but don't power it up or disassemble.

Hi guys, quick update about my disks:

- The good one has been cloned with HDD Raw Copy. I opened the cloned disk with UFS Explorer and have been able to recover some files.
Looks like UFS can only recover the files it sees. Now I'm trying to recover with "Remo recover" but It's taking ages.

- The bad one... I've watched multiple video on how to open it safely...and I did It.
I think It's pretty dead

i wasn't expecting a clean surface but i had cases where the disk sounded similarly and i got pretty good results after cleaning...
This one is apparently not that type. However, i would be interested how that platter looks like after cleaning it a bit. It is hard to tell by the pic.

It was difficult to move the head out of the scratch. It's pretty deep.
When I stopped the disk, It was running and doing a bad sound.

I finaly had a look at the recovered files (from Remo recover). Most of the files are corrupted.
Is there a "easy" process to remove corrupted files?
For exemple, I have a lot of pictures, the thumbnail seems ok but when you open It, you only get the first 5% of the image.
