Hi all,

New to learning data recovery and soaking up as much information as I can. I have a Toshiba 2.5 drive that has a dead pcb. Drive and pcb details pictured below.

This is a drive for learning purposes and has absolutely no important data on it.

Plug drive in and it doesn't make a sound, doesn't vibrate, spin nothing.

Took off pcb and plugged pcb in to probe with multimeter. It appears that where the diode would be has 5v. The input of the fuse does too. Output of fuse has nothing. So fuse is blown. I measured for short from input of fuse to ground and it looks good. Measured output to ground and looks like there is a short. I applied voltage to the output of the fuse to see if I could tell what component failed and it looks like IC102 gets really hot. Which is a TLS2605 and I believe that is the motor control?

I have a new pcb coming and I believe ic602 is the one that needs to be swapped to new board. Is that correct?

What would I measure to see if the preamp was fried? Also, are there any other troubleshooting steps that should be done or things I should have done instead of what I did?

Thanks for your time!

Yes, IC602 is the chip that needs to be transferred

you can surely find the supply lines for the preamp, + and -, check those on the preamp connector (HDA side of course) against short to gnd to rule out a preamp damage.
Another way is to compare measured values to a known good drive on all preamp terminals and if you experience significant difference, consider the preamp as toast.

Serial port does not spit out anything unless you nudge it to do so.

Really? And you don't know how to enter VM or ML ?

No, i don't, please teach us.
do i need a kbd for that?

Chill out a bit, i saw your last few posts are only nagging others.

what do those cmds tell you about the preamp?

pepe
ps: there are commands that can give a hint about preamp but these are neither VM or ML.

What about FL and PL?
:D :D :D

ML will give you the FW running as well as the state (33/44 or 88/99 or .....)

Who cares?

What I know is enough to do my job.
You know something more? OK. Keep it for life...

I told my method of checking it, then you came with this terminal idea, which i did not really think of, coz it is more complicated than a multimeter, because some of the commands do not work with an uninitialized pcb. But you looked as if you know what you are talking about. Apparently didn't. :(

There are 3 levels of terminal support on Toshiba drives:
1. MPU level (..... prompt)
If MPU is OK it loads Flashware.
2. Flash level ( > prompt)
If Flashware is OK it spinups the drive, unloads the heads and tries to read SA.
3. Media level
If SA is readable loads P-list, G-list, TG-list, S-module, Smart, etc...
If something is wrong with the PCB you could figure it out.
On every level the overlay is changed, so the command set is changed too.

Is it the same written in your PC3K manual?

dunno, i rarely see a pc3k manual.

Let me repeat: we are not trying to diag the pcb. We need to diag the PREAMP.
your 3 levels in my vocabulary:
- mask rom with prompt %
- PE loader with prompt #
- Main fw with prompt >

if you power up a working pcb, it will end up loading the Main firmware coz it finds everything OK.
This can be disabled so that it enters the PEloader. Alternatively you can enter the PELoader from the Main fw using a terminal command.
But even if the Main fw is loaded, some commands are not working OOB if the HDA is NOT attached, so you can't really talk to the preamp if you attach it afterwards (we don't attach and power up a pcb to a preamp we are trying to diag, right? ).

It's hard to tell where the PJ801 pins go, but if you want to try to map them out, let me know and I'll try to help you. If we can identify the preamp power supply pins, then we can at least verify whether the preamp is shorted.
