Hello,

Do anyone have some information about the pinout of J1 connector? This is the 20-pin Head Stack Assembly connector of Caviar WD hard disks (the gasketed connector that interconnects the preamp/heads assembly to the PCB).

There are no datasheets or pinouts of Marvell chips of that era (Caviars around 2000's year), or there is a lack of these now in comparison with several years ago.

I could find some data but there are some signals identification still missing. It would be very helpful to know all the pinout, since then you could test integrity of a preamp/heads assembly out of circuit (not connected at all). This is useful because a defective preamp/heads assembly could damage a good PCB swap.

Apart from the obvious shortcircuit testing of preamp/heads assembly voltages (+5V and -5V to ground), one could test the integrity of the serial clock, data, chip select signals, at least with a diode testing to know if some of these lines have compromised the internal reversing diode associated to the protection of these lines (these lines contain typical reversing diodes to Vdd and to GND, depending of the preamp internal design).

This is all I have for now:

HSA connector J1 pinout:

Pin 1 - GND
Pin 2 - -5V
Pin 3 - NC or GND (no connection or ground, varies with PCB models, extensive list)
Pin 4 - +5V
Pin 5 - ¿?
Pin 6 - ¿?
Pin 7 - ¿?
Pin 8 - NC (no connection, not even pad on PCB, at least in some PCBs, extensive list)
Pin 9 - ¿?
Pin 10 - ¿?
Pin 11 - ¿RDY? (Read channel, please not confuse with RDY status signal)
Pin 12 - ¿?
Pin 13 - ¿RDX?
Pin 14 - ¿?
Pin 15 - ¿?
Pin 16 - NC (no connection, not even pad on PCB, at least in some PCBs, extensive list)
Pin 17 - VC (voice coil)
Pin 18 - ¿?
Pin 19 - VC (voice coil)
Pin 20 - ¿?

The more interesting signals to know would be pins 5, 7, 10, 14, 18, 20, since those go to Marvell read channel/controller.

Thank you in advance for any information.

It should be easy to identify the write channel (5 & 7).

Can you upload a photo?

Something like this?

This might help you to understand the preamp connections:
