I just set up this new Barracuda 2Tb from Seagate. I have it running a very large
file transfer from the source drive.

Crystal Disk INfo shows a temp of 51C after about an hour of this job.
I just processed the warranty form. How much problem is the Crystal Disk temp
showing in the warning "red"?

It feels hot too unlike my regular Barracuda. The difference is this one they are selling
has more buffer memory at 256.

The drive type is ST2000DM008

my previous one that has run fine for 23K hours is the ST2000DM006

No replies on this but my followup is that HD ran hot a couple hours and
then started to chirp or click or whatever it's called. I Sent it back for
a different ST2000DM008

A followup question I have is: Do these '008's have problems because they
are contructed thin, or heat up because of the larger memory cache?

These seem to be the only Barracuda in the market for Seagate. My old reliable ST2000DM006 is not available.

Is the ST2000DMA08 constructed in the more heavyweight dimention?

I stick with Seagate b/c they are quiet.

cooling a hdd is never a bad idea. A large, slow fan runs quiet, still can do miracles :)
However, 51C is not extreme, it should have had run longer that's for sure.

Thanks for the reply. I've had/have hot running Hitachis but bought them used.
This Seagate was new. All sorts of things were going thorough my head as I ran it and tried to get a clone backup done: the larger cache was causing a read write heatup/mismatch.

My stuff is old but running on an AMD Phenom II. A fan would ot have helped this. Besides
I run everything bench style-- no case. So this is a Free Air HD. ;-)

my stuff is also 'bench style' as you call it. But forced ventilation can still cool things down even if it is not very strong.
The heating may be due to drive background activities, which are ran pretty often in SMR drives.
ST2000DM006 is most probably not SMR, it's having 64MB cache only.
ST2000DM008 is SMR for sure.
This is a significant difference, throughput can drop bellow the speed of your internet connection :)
The drive produces more heat if it is bsy inside than in an idle state.

these might be related to the heating up, but it still do not explain clicking...

Clicking is not a feature. ;-) The HD was a dud.

I do not know the terms for the M006 and M008 you describe. If I could get another M006 I'd do it. My internet speeds are slow anyway. But after a bit of looking either online or at Best Buy they are only showing the M008.

Anything known about firmware for either one of the Seagates?

As it is I have a couple of HDs returned or due for refund. I tried a White Label 2x before
getting a refund. Once I fill out my backups as as 2Tb the headache will be over with.

What has been the experience of the Seagate Pipeline series?

Low Level format wipes NTFS. My bad. I was not thinking of this in sequence.
The Seatools ran but Win7 had to have NTFS/MBR etc reinstalled.

I am done playing with test tools for awhile.

The Win7 installer is running. This is superstition on my part. I've run into
too many of those Win7 can't find the desktop errors. Those come from moving
an HD from one machine to another even if similar motherboard. So to avoid that I'm laying down a scratch Windows before any full clone job. The goal in this is to make
the new drive the work horse on my 24/7 machine which runs long jobs.

OK, that scratch OS is installed. I will start the clone job overnight a while from now.
