Hi there,

Received a WD Green WD30EZRZ-00J99B0 (Dragon) with a burnt SMOOTH chip (left one the picture).
According to the client, this occured after a change of his PSU.

The patient PCB is a 2060-771698-002 REV P2.
MCU Marvell 88i9146-TFJ2
VMC Smooth L7251 3.1

I have similar PCB as donor: same board, with 88i146-TFJ2 and L7251 3.1 chips as well, but coming from a WD10EARS-00MVWB0 (Sadle Back Gen 6). As we see, the family is different.

There are differences in what is written below the controller model names.
Code:
patient MCU
P2W2254.1
1032 B2P

donor MCU
P2F9940.5
1013 B1P

patient VMC
AAAG V5

donor VMC
9910U V5

After moving the U12 chip to the donor, I can hear the disk spinning and then the head stack assembly moving but slamming back.

I assume internal damage, which either triggered the burn of the VMC, or that was triggered by the PSU beyond the burn of the Smooth chip.

However, since the donor board comes from a different family, I would appreciate if someone could confirm that I didn't miss something and that the different writings below SMOOTH's L7251 3.1, as well as below Marvell's 88i9146-TFJ2 don't mean that the controllers are programmed differently.

Thank you.

B2P not equal to B1P
ID processor - 7412 аnd 7411, accordingly.
And you need to ring the switchboard in the germoblock on the patient.

Most likely dead pre-amp.
This damage is common on WD drives, especially when the vcm is toasted on the side facing the HDA contacts (as happened in your case).
