TOSHIBA HDD2H74 not recognised/read, can't pull data

July 6th, 2022, 14:09

Hi there. I have a problem with a TOSHIBA HDD2H74 coming from an old white macbook unibody. It was taken out of the macbook and with a tool that converts/adapts this type of hard drives I was trying to pull data on my macbook pro. What happened is that the hard drive was recognised and the data got read (long process) and then copied for a little while (a few GBs), and then stopped and never recognised again. Then I bought a more expensive tool that reads these type of hard drives and the TOSHIBA was read again, but this time the reading process of the files was never ending until it stopped doing it and the Hard drive was not recognised anymore again. Any idea? Faulty Hard drive?

Could be a failing drive did you check the SMART on it - Any odd noises or clicking? I'm curious as to the tools you have purchased as any old sata to usb cable should have worked. If you keep hammering the drive trying to copy files you may be risking damage to it and data loss, you should really clone/image the drive rather than just trying to copy the data from it.

How do I check the SMART on it? No clicking noises.
How do I copy/image the drive?

Sounds very much like the drive was dying as now it’s dead, at least for “normal” tools anyway.

If the data isn’t important then you could try cloning with some non-windows software like ddrescue or hddsuperclone, both of which are Linux based and can be run from a bootable USB.

But be warned that DIY attempts are likely to make it worse, so if the data is at all important then please consider using a data recovery pro.

How can I can I clone the hard drive if now it's not recognised/visible at all?

I'm not a mac user, but a quick google should offer suggestions on accessing smart. This for example.

https://apple.stackexchange.com/questio ... s-or-later

Assuming your mac isn't an M1 you can download the livecd from www.hddsuperclone.com and create a bootable USB to run it. There's a greater chance the drive will be seen and may even be stable enough to clone/image under linux.

Be warned though, if the drive has physical problems you may be turning your data into dust or damaging the heads by repeatedly trying and failing.

There are enough of us in the UK offering DR pro services and you've probably paid out close to what logical recovery would have originally cost already buying multiple adapters, you certainly will if you need to buy any file recovery software after cloning.

Thank you for answering and for the tip.

I manage to install a bootable linux stick using this video

But now how do I copy and trace any hard drive from there? I can't see any. Thank you

The developer has a youtube on hddsuperclone basic usage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xSXXW42Ouw

You will need a second drive of equal or greater size connected to the machine at the same time to use as destination for the image or clone. Before you do that though I would suggest you run hddsuperclone and check the drive is visible and available as a source drive, if it's not then you're not going to be able to clone it.

That's the package rather than the livecd ISO You want this file http://www.hddsuperclone.com/sitev1/hddlivecd/download

I have a feeling you may need someone a bit more technical to assist you with this.
