If you ask Google for PATA-SATA adapter you'll get plenty. Check in graphics. Those are the same as ACE has.

Yes that's right.

Ah I think I've misunderstood what the adapter does, but I think I get it now. So would things like these work just as well?

bridge chip make is important because some brands limit the commands to the set documented in T13 ata specs. It was long time ago but i had some with JM20330 bridge chip, which is used on the ACElab adapter as well.

the one Melvin linked may have the same IC, but i can't really read it on the photo...

The bridges are pinout compatible and bidirectional, but you need to be aware whether they are configured for a SATA host and IDE device, or IDE host and SATA device,

That bridge is an unknown quantity, but the marking on the rear of the PCB ("20330") suggests that it may be a JM20330 clone.
