While I agree with your sentiment in regard to destroying drives, I ask you, since when has any DR shop shared the results of their reverse engineering, aka "research"? Certainly not @pepe. In reality, nobody benefits except the receiver of the donation.

i would argue with the above a bit (it seems to be a habit of mine . When somebody becomes able to recover something due to research, both he/she and his/her clients benefit from the result.
Anyway, i would be happy to play on that damaged thing...

This is not true.
Often people who do RE on unknown devices or difficult problems of known devices will share/sell their results with/to other DR labs that they trust. The clients of these DR labs will also benefit by having their data recovered.

So I put the drive in a sata USB enclosure Device Manager does show the enclosure but disk information is blank there.
Diskmgr apparently showed an unknown disk partition of size 465GB and prompted to initialize it which I "cancel". So I guess the drive is okay but may have some problem with the boot partition ?

btw, isn't that a socialist point of view, where everything must be common property? There is a difference between donating a damaged unit for research and spending weeks/months on reversing how it works and developing a solution to an actual problem.
btw, i offered the owner that if i can get around the problem i would give him the data for free, of course without any deadline, etc.

i would also suspect your ssd is accessible through the interface, try to image it, then some logical recovery sw.
perhaps you could show us the first sectors with winhex (needs admin rights to access the physical device).

I merely asked a question, and I ask it again, do you share the results of your RE outside of your special clique? Of course you don't, so the only beneficiary of any donation would be you. I'm not making a value judgment, I'm simply stating a fact. In other words, I'm not saying that you should share, I'm simply saying that you don't. And I don't have a problem with that when the work is non-trivial.

I will try "winhex" hope the trial version is good enough to get some drive information besides possibly creating the drive image. I don't know about a logical recovery s/w which can be used for retrieving though. Any suggestions please?

Looking online...so far I haven't found one I can trust other than "ddrescue".

@silcontool - Grab a copy of hddsuperclone from www.hddsuperclone.com there's an iso to create a bootable thumb drive from, it contains most of the tools you will need. Although I suspect the drive will lock up as soon as you access data.

btw, you seem to be a bit incoherent with yourself, sometimes you ban the DR community because nobody does original research, and only clicking buttons, then if somebody does, you accuse him of being the only one who swallows the profit.
you know, competition is what drives the market and it is good for the clients as well. If competition is killed by one member of the market by disclosing everything, that would harm exactly those who do something on their own. Ace's interest is not to implement everything as it is available, but to keep TS (=update) going, so i think they schedule things to keep the interest for the updates.
btw, there are a lot of solutions that can't be simply included into their utils coz of requiring other tools and deeper knowledge.

Here is the "dmesg" and "lshw" result of the drive. Tried "hddsuperclone" but the "analyze" failed 100% probably because it failed to read from the drive. Is there anything else I can try?

I came across a thread of @fzabkar on "hddoracle" about "In-circuit recovery of SSD with weak NAND". I'm going through it right now.

All that is saying is that it tried to read from the first and last physical sectors, and it failed every time.

Ok trying to understand the problem with the drive. Wondering how come the ssd size at least was reported when it is inside a USB based enclosure and it wasn't even detected while directly connected on the SATA port of the LSI controller I've in my PC. As fzabkar said, it is very well that one of the NANDs is bad which is probably making the controller not allowing the access. Then the question is why the firmware is not allowing the access to the good NANDs ? probably f/w is not written for that ?
Going to check the voltages and get to the UART.

it would be useless because of data being 'interlaced', throughout multiple nand chips.
