ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB-2AR20002

Has 4 Head. H2 died. Imaged H0,1,3 with no bad sector.
I have tried 3 donor head. All says preamp error.
I have 10-15 donors in my hand different FW (10001,10002,10004,20002,20004)
I have checked all with replacing PCB to patient hdd. All donors saying preamp error in terminal.

Is anyone has experience like this. I need advice

I assume need some ROM modify now. I would be crazy.

No. first donor head and patient PCB. (swapped head) There is preamp error
After then, tried donor PCB , patient head. again and again preamp error
Also tried patient PCB , donor head. same. Preamp error
Tried hot swap. cannot access SA

I have tried same FW 2 donors first. 2AR20002
After then tried all another versions . But All of them gave preamp errror

I think you need to find a donor with an L2598 preamp.

FWIW, I notice that the patient PCB has a 16MB SDRAM whereas the donor's is 8MB.

I also notice that some PCBs have a TLS2605 motor controller while others have a TLS2602.

Why don't you install your patient PCB on your donor drives until you find one that spins up?

Just read preamp version in terminal after power up your donors. That's all that's needed to find a matching one.

Sometimes this error occcure PCB connecting points, I have checked screws also. (this info for future researching persons)

Perhaps you'll have better luck finding a matching preamp if you find a donor with the same PCB??

It's just bad luck.

The patient Drive shows DOM 02/2013 try donors with max + or - 3 Month and same letters of first half of the Serial Number to find the right one with the same PAUNI. It's sometimes a pain in the a... with these drives.

There is nothing hard to find a donor in Samsung. You plug the drive, open utility, power up and you have preamp version in the first lines: 2958 or 5565 or 2957. 5565 and 2958 are cross compatible.
Or just open the drive. Heads with different preamp are build in a different way.

Of course, but when you have to do that with 20-30 Drives it is just pain in the a...

Not to mention when you don't own a compatible and functional donor anymore and have to order them online.

That's what i do when buying donors. I plugg them and check preamp. This way i have all of them marked. And checking one drive with terminal takes few seconds...
Can't see why both methods would make the donor not functional anymore.
But if you buy one and count on that it will be 2958 or 5565 that it will take some time. More than 90% of all i ever bought were 2957.

The preliminary donor selection can be made on the basis of a small label at the bottom
It should be the same central part of the P/N designation

That's interesting. I notice that the ST1000LM024 model has 3 versions of this code -- G94A, G941 and G141. I believe that the the third digit is the number of preamp channels (1 channel per head). In this case there are 4 channels.

The 640GB (3 heads) and 750GB (3 heads) models also have a "4" in this position.

The 250GB (1 head) and 500GB (2 heads) models have a "2" in this position.

The ST2000LM003 (6 heads) and ST1500LM006 (5 heads) have a "6" in this position.

Perhaps the OP could compile a list of these codes together with the preamp IDs in terminal. I suspect that one of the characters in the code (the 2nd character?) could reflect the manufacturer of the preamp while another (the 4th character?) might identify the actual device.
