Hi,
i got 3 Identical WD Red Pro 6TB SAS Drives (WDC WD6002FFWX) that got ATA locked within a security erase by a Friend.

Scenario:
The Drives came out of a Storage System and while Secure Erasing
(hdparm --user-master m --security-erase NULL /dev/sda)
the three disks, the Server doing it died mid way, so the Secure Erase probably havent finished at that point!

Now i got these Disks to use and Wonder if its possible to Unlock them and get them Usable again?

I tried unlocking them by using these master passwords i found on the internet, and ofc also NULL or (32 spaces).
Code:
hdparm --user-master m --security-erase WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCW /dev/sda
hdparm --user-master m --security-erase WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD /dev/sda

All result in an:
Code:
hdparm --user-master m --security-erase-enhanced NULL /dev/sda
security_password: ""

/dev/sda:
Issuing SECURITY_ERASE command, password="", user=master
SECURITY_ERASE: Input/output error

This is the Info of the Drives (all are identical):
Code:
/dev/sda:

So he told me he used "NULL" as Password for secure-erase i dont have further info about that.
Is there any chance to get these Disks usable again with reasonable effort?

Looks like your drives are WD-HGST. If such drive can't read service area, it looks like security-locked. Modelname/firmware version/maxLBA store in SPI flash. Usually, in this case, only a few smart-attributes are available with unrealistic values.

IIUC, if the server's PSU died rather than the drive, the drive should automatically resume and complete the secure erase when power is restored. Or am I misunderstanding something?

Hi, Frank. I talking about there is no any "secure lock" really. If there is no HDA's answer for PSU's request, drive still stay in maximum security stage. (We can see it as "security lock"). I think, if TS will connect PCB only (without HDA), he can see the same picture as now.
