Windows successfully installed drivers for it without any problems. Now I've got the problem stated above. Any ideas?

Measuring TX and RX pins I get 5v on RX and 5.10v on TX. Description says that I need to supply voltage for it, but I've got no idea how. Any ideas?

Modded it to be 3.3v, but now I get 3.6v on Rx. Any ideas if its gonna be safe for the Seagate drive?

It seems like voltages are in spec for TTL adaptors. Now, after powering on the drive, then plugging in the TTL adaptor, activity LED on the adaptor lights up for a while, then turns off. Running PuTTY and setting 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity and no flow control, hangs with an cursor. Any ideas?

Got it to do something, at least. Changing to XP sp3 and to hyper terminal, and connecting Tx to Rx and Rx to Tx, I now get errors that it can't read something. Switching back to Tx-Tx and Rx-Rx i end up with blinking cursor. Any ideas?

You should connect the transmit pin (Tx) of one device to the receive pin (Rx) of the other, and vice versa.

As for the "Niwot" errors, I don't know.

I already did connect Tx (TTL) to Rx (disk) and vice versa. Didn't say that correctly. Any ideas?

Made some gibberish appear in PuTTY with seagate drive with reversed connection (Tx to Rx and vice versa). So I should have made a connection to the drive, although its still not working correctly. What I also noticed is that, green LED on TTL lights up when connections are reversed albeit dimly. It doesn't light up when Tx goes to Tx. Any ideas?

Segate terminal
family 7200.10(9,8,7) 9600 bps 8N1
family 7200.11(12,14) 38400 bps 8N1
Both the output to the terminal and the commands are completely different.
All this has long been an open secret (and documentation) on the Internet.
Just like connecting to a terminal. 8)

Thanks for the reply. And yes I chose the right settings, but I still get nothing no screen when pins are set correctly or some gibberish after I change the pin connections. Any ideas?

1. Selecting the correct adapter voltage (1.8V, 3.3V, 5V).
2. Physical connection Rx-Tx, Tx-Rx, Gnd-Gnd.
3. Selecting the correct terminal parameters.

Done everything as you said, but still nothing in terminal. Whats weird is that, there are 2 pins with 2 different voltages on the drive. Pin 3 (Rx I presume) is 4.9v volts while pin 4 (Tx I presume) is 3.3v. Using 3.3v on the adaptor. Any ideas?

That was the only exception. I only got the errors once to appear, sometimes, but rarely, I get some gibberish to appear.

Indicate the name of the disk.

Seagate ST310014ACE, presumably from first gen xbox. Bought it as untested with other half working drives. My suspect would be the TTL adaptor since all the tutorials use MAX232 based TTL's while I got PL2303HX based one.

Anybody know what settings I need for seagate momentus 7200.2? I'm trying to see if my TTL adaptor works. Plugging Tx to Rx and Rx to Tx ends up with some x's and gibberish. Connecting Tx to Tx and Rx to Rx and pressing ctrl + z ends up with a 9 in terminal. Using 38400 baund, 8n1, no parity, no flow control.
