Hi folks,

I have an old WD20EFRX drive that was used in a QNAP NAS and is now showing critical SMART values. The drive has become extremely slow, and the QNAP system can no longer boot from it.

However, when I mount the drive on a PC, I can still access the data, although copying files is very, very slow.

I was thinking of creating a block-level image of the disk (using ddrescue) to recover the data later, but I’m concerned the drive might fail completely during the process.

The drive also has over 62,000 power-on hours, and the Reallocated_Sector_Ct is in FAILING_NOW status with 1971 reallocated sectors.

Given these values, do you think it's worth trying to image the drive with ddrescue, or would it be safer to send it to a professional data recovery service?

Ciao,
gli hdd WD che hanno questo tipo di problemi necessitano di un intervento a livello firmware altrimenti la clonazione risulterà molto difficoltosa (a volte impossibile).
La modifica dei moduli fw permette di bloccare il processo di riallocamento automatico dei settori danneggiati, tale processo ostacolerebbe la clonazione perchè il fw impegnerebbe troppo il disco già malandato, le testine potrebbero danneggiarsi.

Inoltre c'è anche il problema dell'accesso lento ai settori (anche su quelli sani) a causa dei settori pendenti collezionati su un certo modulo fw, la modifica permette quindi di pulire tale modulo così che il fw non resti impegnato inutilmente nel "trattare" tali settori, in tal modo si stabilizza il disco che torna ad offrire un accesso normale ai settori e la clonazione può avvenire senza grossi ostacoli (ammesso che non ci siano altri seri problemi come qualche testina danneggiata o superficie graffiata).

Ontrack non è la migliore ma molto costosa a causa dei grandi uffici che devono pagarsi.
Non servono grandi uffici, ma l'esperienza di un professionista che sa come lavorare e gli strumenti giusti. Per lavorare sul firmware si usano strumenti costosi che le ditte di recupero dati possiedono.
