Hi everyone. I have this SSD which has got me stumped. It shows no output to the registers when connected to power. I first suspected one of these S2DHB (voltage converters?) but I don't know. I don't have a good one of these to compare, so I'm unsure if I'm missing anything obvious.

I tried a quick check for a short with freeze spray and the lower S2DHB warmed up pretty quick, but it doesn't seem shorted.

Measure the resistance between pin #3 and ground.

What is the output voltage at the large inductor at the right hand side of the PCB?

V1, V2, V3 would be the supply voltages.

marking CDEA, DFN-10

unknown - CDEA-DFN10, can stand with 2R2, R47 chokes, usually makes 3.3V power (4-EN 6-FB)

It turns out CDEA

1, 2, 3 throttle output. ---> Lx ? (FZ)
4 - EN 5 volts.
5- through a 148 kΩ resistor with 5 volts, on the leg 4.7 V.
6-FB through a divider, one 270 kΩ, to the ground 59 kΩ. ---> feedback ref must be 0.6V (FZ)
7- on the capacitor (maybe somewhere else)
8- through a 10 ohm resistor with 5 volts.
9, 10 - input 5 volts.

There is no short-circuit, it seems that everything is at the output of 0.3 volts.




S2xyz can be either an SOT23-5 or SOT23-6 IC (pin #5 of the 6-pin package is not used). It appears to be either an APS2420ATBER (5-pin) or RS3402 (6-pin). Suitable substitutes appear to be SY8009AAAC, SY8009BABC, JW5222SOTB, JW5222SOTA.

Here's what I've got so far. Apologies if I've missed anything, that was a lot of info!

Top S2xxx chip PIN 3 --> GND == OL
Bottom S2xxx chip PIN 3 --> GND == 11.7Ω

V1 == 3.29v
V2 == 1.24v
V3 == 0.93v

Large inductor near V1 == 3.20v

CDEA
1,2,3 == 3.19v
4 == 5.02v
5 == 5.05v

6 == 0.59v
7 == 0v GND?
8 == 5.10v
9 == 5.10v
10 == 5.10v

It does look like whatever is being powered by the "Bottom S2xxx chip" is overloading the supply. I think the chip is OK, and the output voltage seems plausible.

I would think that if one of the capacitors is leaky, it shouldn't stop the SSD from working as long as the supply is OK. Instead, I would suspect one of the major ICs. You now need to determine if any of the capacitors around the NANDs measure 11 ohms. If so, then it could be the NAND itself which is bad. Otherwise, look for an 11-ohm capacitor around the controller.

Is one NAND warmer than the other?

Is it possible that there are two problems? A leaky capacitor may have gone unnoticed for a long time, but an unrelated firmware problem may have developed more recently.

I measured a bunch of caps around the NANDs so here's a photo of that. Nothing gets noticeably hotter than anything else, although the whole board does get a bit warm when powered up for a short while. The 37ohm ones seem to be on the 3.3v side.

Drive does not ID when shorted for safe mode, so I don't think it has a firmware problem?

Pull the NAND off it and retest but if it's for recovery it's time to look for a donor just to get the job done.

Check the FB (feedback) pin of the converter IC. It should be 0.6V when the IC is regulating at the correct output voltage.

Yes, on CDEA chip, Pin 6 == 0.59v

Hello together,
i have a Verbatim Vi550 512GB, with the same controller, similar layout, almost the same behavior, except it doesn't heat up.

It draws almost constantly between 100 and 110 mA , no obvious sign of life, no status on SATA register (BSY or RDY ), all the voltages are looking good, 3.3V, 1.8V, 0.9V, undetected, including ROM mode is not working.

Something strange for me, is that on pin 1 and 2 (connected together) on SATA connector but also on pin 3, the SSD returns 3.3V. I wonder why? And what could this mean? I'm also looking for a donor for comparison.

Meanwhile I would love to hear some thoughts if possible.

Thanks for the answer. It could be, but the 3.3V comes from the drive, no external 3.3V is applied. Did the drive (controller) go into drive sleep mode by itself?
And a small correction: the drive is constantly consuming 40mA.

Check the crystal.

You could try shorting SATA Power pins 1,2,3 to ground, but I can't see why this would help.
