I’ve been approaching this the wrong way.

The latest build now has a diagnostic bundle specifically for cases the recovery engine does not understand.

Select the working directory, select the image, then:

Advanced > Create diagnostic bundle

Post or email me the resulting bundle.

It does not require sending the disk image. It gives me the structural information needed to compare unsupported Sony XAVC variants and improve the recovery engine.

Hopefully this makes it easier to investigate failures from other cameras and cards as they turn up.

Will do!

Thanks where thanks is due: @Arch Stanton

His diagnostic bundle gave us exactly what I needed. The ILCE-7SM3 uses a different kkad layout, but the recording sequence is completely deterministic.

For anyone else looking at these structures:

AVC: predominantly 820-byte kkad records
HEVC: predominantly 1492-byte kkad records

(they do shift at the end)

In this image the change in kkad structure lines up exactly with the independently detected 40 AVC and 16 HEVC recordings.
The new build auto-detects the layout. No camera/profile selection is required.

We have released Version 2.0 of our free Sony XAVC recovery tool. The significant change is support for compatible Sony XAVC HS HEVC/H.265 recordings.

HEVC was considerably harder than the older AVC/H.264 layout. HOLY F, Joep was not kidding.

A Canadian user, Jason, provided a useful real-world case involving missing footage from September 9. An early HEVC test build found the Sony recording structures and produced recognizable preview frames. That proved the footage still existed, but it did not prove we could reconstruct the recording.

I will note, the container looked correct, but the file would not play. FFmpeg reported invalid NAL unit sizes and errors splitting the input into NAL units.

I am happy to report, version 2.0 is the result.

The tool supports compatible Sony XAVC S AVC/H.264 and XAVC HS HEVC/H.265 MP4 recordings. It does not support MXF-wrapped XAVC.

v2.2.28 released

added recovery support for fake capacity sd cards (extended translation recovery).
added ability to use an unformatted (working) card image to improve recovery results for unknown layouts.
added ability to select what recordings to be recovered based on date, size, codec, etc.
added visuals to GUI, this allows user to see if card was CMD38'd visually.

Thanks Joep.

I think the only piece missing is MXF support.

If anyone is willing for provide me an image of a FX6, FX9, FS7, Venic, etc. I'd like to complete this tool.
