Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I'm assuming that the preamp reports the temperature (0x1A = 26C), so I'm wondering what kind of preamp fault would allow it to remain partly operational.

I beleive this is not the correct value, also there was a clear noise coming from the head at every (PreampFaultStatus = 00C0) indicates that the head was very weak to operate normally.

It's too late now, but you could have warmed up the preamp with a hair dryer and checked for a change in the reported temperature.

It's not too late, defective head still available.
After cloning complete I can reassemble the defective head and do the experiment and post the results.

Here the difference :
Boot 0x40M
SpinUp
Trans
Rst 0x40M Thermistor Temp 001D
PreampFaultStatus = 00C0
PreampFaultStatus = 00C0
PreampFaultStatus = 00C0
(29C instead of 26 after some heat applied)

If you feel inclined to experiment, maybe you could cut off one head and see if the fault status changes.

The drive has only one head.
