Jonny_Quick, the key point fzabkar is making is that MTBF is a population statistic, not a lifespan prediction for one drive. A 1-million-hour figure doesn't mean a single unit will run for 114 years; it comes from accelerated testing and reflects an annualized failure rate across many units. So use it to compare models and warranty tiers, not to estimate when yours will die. For any drive you buy, keep backups and monitor SMART attributes such as reallocated sectors over time.

The population framing is the key part. MTBF describes a large sample over a defined test period, so a 1 million hour figure does not mean any single drive will run that long. It also assumes a constant failure rate and excludes wear-out phases, which is why it is a poor predictor for one unit. For a buyer, the more practical signals are warranty length, workload rating, and reported annualized failure rates from large deployments. Backup habits matter far more than the number on the box.

fzabkar's point about it being a population average is the key one. MTBF isn't a predicted lifespan for a single drive; it comes from a statistical model, often expressed as failure rate per hour across many units under controlled conditions. So a high figure doesn't mean your specific drive will run that long, and bathtub-curve behavior matters early on. I'd treat the number as one rough reliability indicator, not a guarantee, and weigh warranty terms and backup habits more heavily when comparing models.
