Jonny_Quick, the key point fzabkar is making is that MTBF is a population statistic, not a lifespan prediction for one drive. A 1-million-hour figure doesn't mean a single unit will run for 114 years; it comes from accelerated testing and reflects an annualized failure rate across many units. So use it to compare models and warranty tiers, not to estimate when yours will die. For any drive you buy, keep backups and monitor SMART attributes such as reallocated sectors over time.

The point about MTBF being a statistical average for a large population, not a lifespan prediction for one drive, is the one worth holding onto. A figure in the hundreds of thousands of hours doesn't mean that unit will run that long; it describes expected failure rates across many units under defined conditions. For practical buying, I'd weigh workload rating, warranty length and your backup habits over the headline number. Real longevity also depends heavily on temperature, vibration, power quality and how the drive is used, so two identical models can behave very differently.
