I have been trying to check out a disk I've connected to a USB port. I haven't used the disk in a while, but it seems to be mostly OK according to Windows. However, to be safe, I wanted to check the disk out with some diagnostic and repair software.

After running MHDD, checking the log, and reading some information from posts on here, I have discovered that MHDD apparently hasn't read any of the blocks on the disk, apparently viewing them ALL as bad/unreadable.

I'm including here an example of the log report from MHDD:
þ Error in block 0; LBA: 4294967295
þ LBA Timeout: 0

When HDDscan was run through Windows, however, it only had problems with a relative handful of blocks, which had read times of >500ms.

Is there anything I need to do in MHDD to make the disk more accessable to it? If not, is there anything I can run through Windows that will allow me to mark/hide the problem blocks found by HDDscan so Windows doesn't use them?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Did you run MHDD under MS-DOS?
Please provide first 50 lines of the log.

Well, it was either MS-DOS, or a good imitation.

First 50 lines? OK

That should be at least 50. I don't know if, or why, you'll need the timestamps, but I'm leaving them in, just in case.

You have to figure out if it was dos. The only reason why could you see this is if you ran mhdd under windows.

And I would recommend you to remove the drive from the USB enclosure and attach it to the IDE.

To fix "long reads", you will have to erase the whole drive. I think you can use HDDScan to do this.

Sounds like there's nothing I can do, then, since I can't connect it to an IDE. If that's the case, thanks anyway. It's not like I was planning to use it for anything important, just more convienent access to some music files, all of which would be backed up to begin with. Since Windows can read it, there's no reason I can't still do it, I guess.

As for the DOS question, it was whatever was included in the Magic_Boot_Disk_ISO_V2.0.zip file. The OS identification goes by too quickly for me to see it.

Well, thanks again for the help. I'll try erasing the drive and seeing if it will help.

Yep... That was pure dos (comes with magic boot disk).
Erasing should help.
