HI you all

my Maxtor 6Y120L0 was dead (really it is also right now).

What is dead is its electronic board.

I have been lucky and I received one same identical hdd for data recovery.. and you can guess it, I swapped the two boards and made a double data recovery

Note: I've inquired Maxtor. They say that for power testing (RECOMENDED: do not connect data cable!) any board from 6Yxxx serie is good

Now, the issue about the board.

I've found this
http://www.dataclinic.co.uk/data-recove ... -Plus9.pdf

I think it may be interesting, but my question is:

does anybody had exeperience about Calypso III board repairs?

The board is clean and no components are blown.

The only thing I've seen that maybe oxided, are the 4 contacts below the board for the motor and the heads (you can see the 4 wires outgoing the motor and enter below the board.

Below there are 4 solder drops for the electric contact.

The drops are "punched" same shape as the metallic "spring" contacts (I think due to the HDD working temperature)

My first attempt would be to remove and re-drop the solder.

But first of all, ask is the better choice.

So thank you if you pass me your experience.

Thank you also for any answer.

Robert

Thank you for the TIP

They have the board but it is very expensive: 47€ (compared with a new hdd... and you must add shipping cost)

Looking at some 6Y60L or 6Y80L I see that the Calypso III board model is the same identical one... ... so it should be only a firmware matter about using one 80Gb or 60Gb board on my 120Gb one...

Do you know something about this?

If it is simply a firmware issue, is it possible to burn in the right one?

Thank you again for any answer and for any new one.

Robert
