I have a 3200KS from Western Digital (320GB caviar).

The Drive works well however it has recently stopped reporting SMART data.
Software like speedfan will read the smart data however it reports only 1 entry type instead of the previous 15 (or so) entries.

I realized there was a problem when I stopped getting a temperature reading from it, speedfan confirmed the drive wasn't reporting all of the data.

At first I thought this was a windows issue, I'm pretty sure this is not the case as I have booted up hard drive diagnostics software that was independent of windows and it showed the same problem.

The issue seems to have appeared after using some data recovery software, however I'm not entirely sure that is the actual cause.

Does the SMART data come from the drive's firmware?
Could that have been damaged and can I restore it?
Any other thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

P.S I have a second drive installed, 80GB WD that reports it's smart data just fine.

Software was Partition Table Doctor. I also reinstalled windows.
The problem was that I somehow lost my partition table not sure how that happened, might have been a faulty windows installation (XP).

I got that smart test from MHDD:

WDC WD3200KS-00PFB0 LBA:625,140,335
SN:WD-WCAPD1682169 FW:21.00M21 CACHE:16384KB Size = 305244MB
To see enhanced information, use command EID <SHIFT+F2>
Init drive: Done

WDC WD3200KS-00PFB0 LBA:625,140,335
SN:WD-WCAPD1682169 FW:21.00M21 CACHE:16384KB
Supports: LBA48 HPA AAM DLMC LBA MS16 DMA (UDMA6,MWDMA2)
SMART: Enabled SelfTest: Supported ErrorLog: Supported
Security: high, OFF. Size = 305244MB

þ Smart -> ATT
Getting SMART attributes... OK
Name Val Worst Raw
þ Log saved to file: LOG\smart.log

Speed fan actually shows 1 attrib:
Raw read error rate: 200 value , worst 6, warn 0
I tried contacting WD but they just said it was my operating system. I would however very much rather fix it myself if possible.

I haven't lost any data.

I just want to fix the SMART reporting.

Why didn't MHDD show any smart attribs, but speed fan showed 1?

If the MHDD doesnot show the SMART report there must be error in your smart module u need to rewrite it in order to correct the problem .

How?

edit:
1) What would cause it to be corrupted?
2) The drive is still under waranty should it be replaced?
3) Could it have been rewritten by an error on my part?

This problem occurs by no reason it just occurs if they accept warranty then go ahaead replace it no u cannot rewrite the Smart data without using professional tools .

But on the other hand there is no threat to the hdd u can use it normally no need to panic at all .

Thanks for your help.

I'll try and get it replaced by the warranty.

SMART is the only real way to predict a drive failure before it happens, even if it does only predict 30% of all failures.

3 month old "caviar" drive just randomly gets an error like this, really annoying.
