I hve a a brand new seagate HDD 500gb on which i loaeded the OS and copied the needed files from my different backup hdd which were much smaller in size! now after copying the files i want to use it on my new system and when i connect this drive, make it master and start the system, it boots and then gives an error (safe mode or start windows manually etccc) then when i select any 1 option the system restarts! but when i make this drive slave it shows only 1 partition and when i select it it ask me to format the drive!

but the same hardisk works fine in the system on which i loaded the operating system! ihve made 3 partitions on this drive and saved data on all 3! but only when i connect it on this system it gives error! and another problem is that i hve forgotten the bios setup password as well, so that i can try detecting the hdd drive there! can anybody help me out with this?

Are you saying you have installed XP on one system and expect it to work on a different one?

This usually does not work, as XP configures itself to the hardware it found when installing (i.e. the HDD controller and MB chipset most importantly). So if you simply stick that install into a different PC, then it won't work as it's looking for some particular hardware which isn't there anymore.

As far as not being seen as a slave, my guess is that XP has formatted the new drive to NTFS and the drive you are trying to read it from (i.e. the master) is formatted to FAT32, and so won't see it.

BIOS password on Desktop PC should be easy to remove, there is usually a CMOS discharge jumper, or remove the CR2032 battery overnight, that should do it.

I don't understand everything quite well, but I suppose U installed the OS on a different PC than U want to use it. Am I right?
if so, and the OS is an XP, don't be surprised, it won't work on a different HW it was installed.

Hi assuming that you have an original disk & COA you can boot the PC from XP disk,
1-> choose boot from CD,
2-> choose install XP,
3-> choose r for repair,

it should re-install windows without loosing any personal files, or user accounts.

Or use a clean install and then use the file & setting transfer wizard to move your stuff to the new OS on your new HDD.

Hi you would have to do fresh install of XP on your new drive first,
Then boot PC from your old drive and go Start, programs, accessories,files & settings transfer wizard.
Run the wizard and save file to new drive.
Then boot from your new drive and click the wizard again.
Tell it this is your new PC and direct it to the saved file.
Let it run.

Bad point is you will have to re-install all your other Apps to the new drive.

I would try a repair installation on the imaged new drive first as it's much quicker and will reset to your new hardware, the only things you will have to do is re-install any service packs if you do it this way.
