Hi there

i have a WD2000JB - 00GVC00
25 sept 2005

I have reversed the polarity on it (pretty damn sure) by plugging in the wrong DC adapter.

Now the light just flashes and no spin no noise.
Is it totally screwed? Will a logic board swap help here?

Image thanks

Harky

Yes, you can try PCB swap from the same drive.

Hi,

Preamp is inside the HDA, mounted on the Head Assembly.
Since it is inside the clean area, it is not really easy to replace it.

pepe

Shortscurcuits :D :D

Seriously what Pepe was saying is that there is a good chance you damaged the pre-amp also. Try to find the same model drive for a donor, if the DCM code is different on the new PCB you will need to change the rom chip also. Just be prepared to sacrifice the cost of a donor HDD to test if the pre-amp is OK or not. If it died when you shorted the drive, and that is often the case, it will usually kill your new PCB. If you really need the data you will have to use a data recovery center or be prepared to take a chance on opening the drive to do a head swap or a pre-amp chip soldering job, neither of which is an easy job. You would want to practice on some donor drives and head swaps on WD are difficult to re-align new heads so the drive can read anything once changed. Also if you aren't successful doing the head change it would make recovery very difficult for a DR company. The upper screw in the lid helps to position the heads on these drives and once loosened they are hard to align again.
