I've just replaced the head unit and pcb on a seagate 80 gb that was shorted out. I used a donor HD with the same model number and same firmware number and same config number. The HD that I'am trying to get the data off of has Windows XP on it, it is strapped as the Slave. In bios it is not recognized and I get this warning: The boot devices have been changed. BBS Boot Priority will be affected. Please enter setup to check. I enter setup and the priority is still the same 1. HD 2. Floppy 3. CD. I then save and exit. The HD is then recognized as Slave with the seagate Model number and firmware number. Then I get the same warning as above to check setup again. If I go to setup the same thing is true again. If I press F-1 the computer goes very, very, very slow and proceeds to open Windows XP on the Master HD but does not show the seagate HD when you open MY COMPUTER. I can feel the HD running and working, it is diffinately talking or doing something and is not clicking. I thought my change over of the head unit went perfect and I expected to see the HD start right up but that didn't happen. Can you help?
Thanks,
LeRoy

If it's not seen in BIOS, then you'll never get XP to see it.

Something is wrong with the drive.

Either the head swap has failed, the PCB is incompatible, the drive has firmware/SA problem or some other physical problem.

Time to stop the DIY DR and send to a professional, with utmost respect Sir!

Yes the site code matchs, the model #'s, the firmware #'s, and the config #'s all match. I am wondering, XP is on both hard drives could this be my problem? I can feel the drive that I replaced the head unit in spinning and talking like crazy. Could it be putting out alot of output that is slowing down the harddrive on my computer?

As far as bios goes, when I boot up without entering setup it doesn't recognize the drive, but if I do enter bios and save and exit it, the drive is listed on the IDE search when the computer completes the boot up after I exit the bios. That is when the computer really slows down but the drive is not listed in XP.
Thanks,
LeRoy

Well, I understood that you meant the drive is NOT recognised in the BIOS.

If it IS recognised properly (i.e. Model & Capacity), then you might be in luck. But the chances are that you have bad sectors on the drive now, which XP can't handle.

Try imaging the drive to a known good one, with something like CopyR.

Then, if that completes OK, insert the image into your XP installation. Should be able to read the data, although you might some sort of DR software (i.e. GetDataBack etc)

I don't see the drive anywhere but on the search for IDE's that it does as it boots up. How can I do a image copy when it isn't listed anywhere else?

Any decent imaging software is O/S independant. Such as CopyR or MediaTools.

Boot from floppy or CD.

So, as long as the HDD is OK, will see it and image it.

I think you should check the drive using Terminal. and see what terminal show.

Some Seagate drive need to change the Flash ROM in order to make the drive detected again.

for your case, if only the the PCB get shorted. I think you just need to change the PCB with the donor and the rewrite/resolder the FlashROM. It will make your harddrive detected again in BIOS normally.

hopefully it will help u.

I just had this happen: I strapped the subject hd as Slave and my good hd as Master. It booted up and went to XP and the subject hd showed up as H: I opened the H: up and everything was there, all the folders. I quickly opened up the good drive in another window and when I did the H: disappeared! Any ideas????? Please explain in NEWBY style.
Thanks,
LeRoy

What exactly are you trying to do in XP?

Have you imaged the drive with a DOS utility yet?

Hi

I would advise to stop abusing that drive with XP, it is extremely useless after a head swap.
in fact, NO OS should even think about there is something on that drive it should interpret as a file system :)
I would check wether the drive can write anything to the disk (on a non-important area of course), and if yes, I would inactivate the MBR of the drive so that no OS could see it. MHDD: Switchmbr.
then I would do the imaging to a known good drive.
regards,
pepe

Yep, don't let XP near it, it'll only make things worse.

If you can't get CopyR to work on your PC, try Media Tools Pro.

Do not attempt to use any Windows based software, until you have an image. Then u can use Windows based s/w to extract the data.
