The notebook got a shock but still function well. After changed a CPU fan, and screen , the XP wouldn't start. Tried normal, last good, safe mode all would crash after the initial windows bar ran a few seconds, it just reboot again and again. Before each reboot, the blue screen would flsh a split of second, couldn't se what it said. Bios hard disk diagnostic showed " #1 - 07 fail"

HP just suggests change HD, but I got important files in it. Tried Fuji ATA diagnostic program., the hard drive didn't show. Tried MHDD 4.6, hard drive is there. Ran scan, it showed red 200 , A 14, others are good. Tried remap, when it reached A it just stuck.

How can I retrieve files from this hard drive? What is the best safe approach to repair it? The funny thing is that after shock, it worked fine, but after changed parts, it just dead ( no shock or damage during changing) any idea whathappened?

If you are looking for a cheap solution just remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to another machine via USB enclosure and just try to copy files from it. There is a chance those files that are important would copy without errors. But if the data is really critical for you it'd better if you send the drive to a good data recovery company right away. While you are playing with it more and more bad sectors appear, heads are degrading etc. You can end up with a clicking drive and that would be really expensive to recover.

You will need a 2.5 to 3.5 converter and an IDE to USB cable. There are many software imaging programs you can use. I usually use Media Tools Pro.

the hard drive is SATA drive. Is there a converter for that? Also, my bios and Xp restore can't see the drive, only MHDD can see it. Is that possible to use usb external drive with MHDD on it to retrieve data from the hard drive? Ifso, how I do it?

In case its a SATA drive, you can plug it directly into a desktop PC. No USB adapter is needed in this case.

I tried it --- hooking up the drive with good PC ATA port and it became drive F: the problem is it is not accessible, but I use MHDD still can access the drive. What should I do to retrieve the the data?

That may not even be because of the HDD! The heatsink may not be seated properly! That may be a warning sign of the processor being damaged when changing the heatsink and/or fan.
