Hi!

unfortunately the motor controller on the Maxtors DiamondMax 10 Harddisk overheated. There are heatbubbles on the IC (labeled with smooth) and the harddisk isn't working anymore.
Now i would like to replace the PCB to get my data back! I already sent several mails to seagate helpdesk but they always respond with the same default text stating that certain parts of the GTLA have to match.

The problem is, that on all the PCB offers one can find on e-bay, there is nothing written about the GTLA of the harddisk itself but only some numbers of the PCB.

I wanted to ask you what is important for me to find a fitting PCB?
and is it even likely to repair the harddisk by replacing the PCB if the motor controller got damaged?

Hi,

It is possible that only the motor controller is burnt, in this case it is enough to replace it. But in many cases when the motor controller burns it takes the DC-DC converter (Q500, for -5V bias) with it. So U have to check that too.
A more simple solution is to find a board with the same beagle processor and replace the ROM ic (U401) to the new board if needed.
Should U receive clicking sounds with the new PCB, this indicates that the preamp is probably gone inside the HDA. There are also some cases when a damaged preamp can damage the DC-DC converter (Q500) on the new PCB, so be careful.

thanks for your reply! Unfortunately i'm a little bit over-challenged with your answer..


1.) How do I check that - and in case the DC-DC converter is damaged too, how can I solve that problem?


2.) How do I find a board with the same beagle processor? In all offers on e-bay the pictures are too small to read what is written on the ic's. There is always written something like "Main Controller IC: 040125100" Does this number have to fit completely the number on my beagle ic?
3.) what's the ROM ic (can't find an ic with U401 on my board) and how do I replace it? Do you mean i have to take something of my old board and solder it on the new one??


4.) what's a preamp and what can I do if it's damaged too? how can i be 'careful'?

I Will Help You In The DC Dc Checking Part .Please Take The Item Out From The PCB By Hot Air or DeSoldering .Then USe The Multimeter [Digital] On Diode Testing Mode And Check The Center Tab To Both Sides With Red Probe In Middle And After That With Black Probe In Middle .You Will Find A Shorted Component Very Easily As You Will Have Zero Resistance

Only first line on the main chip should match - "Beagle D4-D4" for example.
If it doesn't work right away - you will need to swap the ROM chip.

if u cant find the ROM chip on your pcb then the ROM would be masked for that find a pcb with same no as the orignal one .
