I have/had a IBM 120GXP AVVN version. The drive is no longer seen by the bios and hence i can do nothing with it. Is there a way i can access the data if only to transfer it? i have tried it in anothe pc and it is still the same so it cannot be the set up. I can feel the the drive powers up so i believe it is a good sign and there isn't any scratching sound. Ppl have mentioned a freezer trick but i think that is if the heads a stuck? Having investigated the web, i suspect that it could be a corrupted firmware. Can anyone advise on how to proceed or whether my assuptions are correct?

It could be anything.
It could be either bad firmware, bad heads or bad PCB. You can try to swap logic board from exactly the same model and if it doesn't work then there is not much else you can do without right tools and equipment.

Those IBM drives have adaptive info in ROM. I don't think it would help to swap the PCB unless you also migrate the 8 pin ROM from the old drive PCB to the donor. The chances of it working without doing that are very slim, in my experience.

i read that it is possible to bypass the microcode on the drive. is this the factory mode that ppl have mentioned? how can it be done? could it be possible then to obtain a good code and then flash it?

is it a similiar process as getting into safe mode for maxtors as described in the other thread?

Starling is right. In my experience when I recieved these disks with these symptoms the fault has been with damaged NVRAM or damaged GLIST.

wat are nvram and glist? are these hw faults?
