Hello, masters

A while back I worked repairing main frame hard drives for a living, replacing heads and aligning them using a scope to perform cat’s eyes for this type of procedures, and would like to come back to this type of challenge. It was a critical and delicate procedure then and I see that it continues to be. I have read this website procedure on using the straws for retrieving the heads, but I didn’t find information for Hitachi Desktar. What kind of advice can any of you Gurus give me, for me to get started with my first challenge for this particular drive?

Thanks, for any response

Ntech

Hi there,

If you knows that your heads are gone, then the proceedure is the same as for the Hitachi 2.5"....this drive has a ramp aswell.
Straws or folded paper workes good.

Thanks for the picture Bosse,

Now, I am a little confused.. Do I move the heads from the ramp to the platter while spinning the hub with a piece of paper in between, before I pull the head stack or do I remove the screw from the ramp to remove the head stack? I tried practicing with a spare drive and did not succeed. what would be the way to remove the head stack on a disk with ramps,.....this is a picture of my HD....Please help!

Okay guys,

So I replaced the head stack, I found head 1 lingering/crashed (counting from bottom to top starting from 0) and now flying again. I know because I rechecked it after making them fly and have not crashed; now I have a new symptom. Before it used to just click for ever, now it clicks for a couple of minutes and then it settles. I hooked the drive back to an IDE cable and then to a USB, but cant see the drive at all, not even from the bios PC view. What would be my next step to follow?

Thanks for any help and all the help I already got. So far it has been a good challenge.
