Just to allay anyone's potential worries - this article is incorrect. This system is NOT going to be purchased by end-users; the extraction of platters also means headstack removal - which they will not be able to cope with.

However, it will mean that the typical, smaller, data recovery company such as most of you who post on here regularly will be able to do platter transplants with ease. The plastic inserts in recent drives will not pose any problems for this system, nor will any other design "anomalies." This will cope with _any_ hard drive - ancient or current - with up to 5 platters and possibly more when the final product is launched.

Plans are already afoot for a head extraction system - this will be available towards the end of 2008. This WILL enable inexperienced users to extract headstacks or headstack and platters simultaneously - but the cost will preclude any "wannabe" or end-user from purchasing it.
