Hi,

I need to work on the harddisk of an ipod classic.
Does anyone knows here how to open it without damaging the unit ?

Thanks in advance,

Dobre

There is a special nylon tool that you can use to separate the metal enclosure from the plastic, and pry it apart. The hard plastic guarantees you won't scratch anything. You have to pry along the edges where the plastic meets the metal shell.

Without that, I have used a paint scraper successfully, but you have to be careful. Other people have used a guitar pick:

Once you get it apart, be very careful with the ribbon connector that goes from the metal shell to the PCB. It is very easy to ruin this connector if you are not especially careful.

Hi Jon,

Thanks, but that is not the model i have.
The model i have has a very flat top-cover, also from metal.

Take a look at this article:

This seems to be a hard one.

Sorry Dobre. My bad. When you said iPod CLASSIC I assume you meant the traditional meaning of the word "Classic" - i.e. one of the first units. I didn't realize Apple's newer version has that name. What Orwellian thinkspeak!

You open most iPod's the same way so the 1st-6th generation are opened the same way. Here is a guide http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPod/iPod-Classic/Hard-Drive/130/4/Page-1/Hard-Drive

They don't explain something that is very important. There are TWO kinds of clips in this case. The normal metal loops which are almost inconciquental and the second which are pressure tabs or small angled pieces of metal that need to be pushed toward the side of the case in order to release them. Time for ascii graphics. :-D

top of case ->_____
side of case->|\<-angled tab

You have to wedge yourself into a possition of pushing those angled tabs against the side of the case. There are 4 of these tabs on each long side, two at the bottom and one in the center of the top.

GUITAR PICK if you got any about works like a charm

when you open the ipod up slowly open it as there a ribbon cable
which snaps easy

Hi there,

Sorry to bring this old thread up, but i wanted to know a bit more about opening up the iPod Classic. My friend recently gave me his Classic and i'm struggling to get past all the 'locking tabs.' I've done one side, but can't get around the case to open the top/bottom/ or other side (I can post a picture if needed). I've checked on YouTube, Google and Instructables and so far they've been quite helpful.

I've ordered some new prying tools (as my other ones quickly wore away) and i'm thinking about buying some guitar picks as it has been suggested in a previous post and i've used them to open mobile phones etc. Is there a certain thickness i should get? Thicker the better i assume?

Also...does anyone have a diagram as to how i should be opening these tabs? So far i've managed to open one side by bending the plastic case away from the clips - its worked, but its not very pretty. I couldn't make much sense of the previous description :S

Any help is greatly appreciated! :)
