Hi to everyone, im new here and i would like to ask about some trouble i had with my Western Digital HDD. Its a 320 GB SATA hard drive, model WD3200jd-00KLB0 i had buyed form 2 years ago. When i tryied to turn on my pc yesterday right after closing the CPU case (which i always kept open) it did not recognice the hard drive and there was a "clack-clack" sound coming out of the disk. The sound came twice every 10 second or so.To avoid further damage i disconected the HDD and on a closer inspection of the PCB i found out that there was one of the components (Six terminals STPA) that overheated when the disk was running, yet it was not fryied (at least it looks phisicaly normal). The remaining IC components show no sign of being damaged.

Would the problem be solved by replacing the STPA component?
Could there be another cause for the overheating and the sound?
Would it be better to change the whole PCB or just STPA component?
If I change the whole PCB,would I need to change another component?

Hi, I have exactly the same problem, smells burnt.....is it possible to replace the PCB and recover the data on the drive?

It is possible to recover data by replacing a PCB, unless there is other problems with a drive from a power surge besides a PCB.

i have the same problem, an ide version of the drive this time thou. only died onme for no reason yday, yet a slight burnt smell.

When you swap the PCBs you'll have to use the firmware chip (serial flash, SO8 case) from the old board on the new PCB, AFAIK for WD's in general.

I see exactly the same problem on 4 WD2500 EIDE. Looks like on these boards there are two STPA components. Out of the 4 drives only one appears to be intact. Does anyone know what STPA stands for?

If STPA is written on the component itself, it is the SMD marking. I don't know the exact type number, it is probably a DC-DC converter, or a part of it (MOSFET+schottky diode).
