I have the following disk which after a electrical power surge to my pc has a black hole on the smooth chip , result is the disk does not power on or clicks .It does nothing.
I read the sticky articles about maxtor disks in your forum and i performed with success the current continuity tests you describe.

MAXTOR DIAMONDMAX PLUS 9 160GB ATA/133 HDD
CODE: YAR41BW0
K,M,C,D
SN: Y41LVK3E
6Y160P0041201 MFG: 1 MAY 2003
G8FYA
ardent chip c8c1
calypso iii board
040111300(agere Ardent C8-C1) L7250E 1.2 301599100

I searched the net for a replacement pcb and i found one with with everything the same . I dont know if it has the same code (G8FYA) is this crucial for compatibility?

And my main concern is that in my disk there is another 8-pin chip in the top right or bottom left depending on how you look at it of the pcb board which does not exist in the pcb that i found .

I would like your feedback for pcb compatibility.

Thanks in advance

in the attached picture in the yellow circle there is a 8-pin chip in my pcb.

Can i replace it with a pcb without a chip in that location even though most of all the other specs match.

change the smooth IC or change the whole PCB...

but sometime smooth IC burned because of Stucking motor. if this is the problem and data is not important then bin this drive.

The chip that exists in my pvb is the u401 8-pin chip,

there is no such chip on the donor pcb
