I'm new (bla bla bla ) ok straight to the point :
I lost in same day my main(Hitachi) and my backup drive(Maxtor), the backup has most likely a head crash, and the hitachi has most likely a pcb problem (the pcb has a smoke smell), the aim of my thread is trying to be sure of that

Model : Hitachi Travelstar 80GB 5400 rpm / HTS541080G9SA00 Sata 2"5 from an IBM z60m laptop
Behaviour :
- platters spins (no special sounds when they do)
- upon initialisation : clack beep (some reading sound) beep clack ....[during about 10 seconds] then no special sound [no reading, no seeking, platters continue running]
- Bios do not recognize the disk.

I must say that the day they both died was a very hot day

DO you think it is the PCB ? i'm dying to find a donor in my country/area , not as simple as i thought , and do you think i have a single chance to recover the data in it ?

PS: I just found a donor, only difference was the RPM at 7200, should i try its pcb ?

No way!
BTW if the drive (the HTS) is spinning OK, then the PCB is probably not damaged.
Why do u think the maxtor has head damage?

Hi,

Well the HITACHI is spinning, but acting erratically and reporting nothing to BIOS , i used an usb adapter and still get nothing from it.

Regarding the Maxtor, the sound it is making is sooo loud that i doubt any head would resist that, i'll try sort out the hitachi then i'll put it in pieces in a clean room (fortunatly i got one).

I must do what i am doing and hold the bull from horns since i have not even an amateur data recovery in where i live (i must even be the first one who unscrewed a top hdd cover )

So defintly i must use the same PCB if i want to stand a single chance.

Reading and reading and hopping around, i found that the Hitachi symptoms are more likely a head problem as well (*ok here i burst into tears then continue*) so most likely i have to do the most frightening thing that some call : platters exchange.

Keyword was practice, and i have a lot of dead/murdered drives in my boxes, so i started playing with one .. all gone smooth till the point i had to take off the platter ( a unique platter ) , and i must say i'm stuck with that.

How can i remove the platter without damaging it ? i have to touch it at some point ! put it in a temp place and putting it back into second drive.

Holding it from the edges with finger is ok ?

I'm not a data recovery professional, nor trying to take butter and bread, all i really need is get back my data as fast as possible, as a last resort i can try send it over over over seas to the pros for it to be recoverd (before tampering of course), i've put a kidney for sale on e*ay hoping it covers the charges !

Please any comments, links , photos might help.

if heads are damaged, why swapping platters?
That's the worst thing u can do to a hitachi.
swap heads instead. (to remove platters U have to remove heads first anyway...)

Thank you pepe, i thought that swapping platters was easier (see ? i'm a real newbie).

Laura, i pmed you, i'm really thinking that the desire to recover the data by myself is just more risk to loose it defintly.

On first should be checked surface " media" on a clean room , hitachi has some tendence to "head crash" sensor MR´s from Heads damaged physically the platters when touch the platter "where´s data its stored in bit´s way.

I guess with my tight budget none is going to take the bad job of getting back my data

Here is very clearly what i need :
- copy the old bad harddrive (the HITACHI, read first posts please) into a new one (all reachable files) , and give me access to it by any means (send back the copied harddrive, ftp download , other) .

The HITACHI has not been opened, a PCB exchange has been started but not tried, the hard disk general state is not bad, no special sounds can be heard if shaken very softly (ie platters sound ok).

The harddisk is mine, i'm not outsourcing, the data inside is mostly personal work + some professional snippets.

Please pm me a fast quote, your web site and i'll be asap back to you, i live roughly in the mediterranean sea, and ready to send the (*censored*) hard disk asap, as soon as an agrement is reached.

Hitachi : still waiting for the pros answers
@pepe : please could you jolt me a pm so i can move on (you didn't answer my last pm, i do not know if you accepted recovering it or not)? with all my thanx.
@salvationdata: no need to spam more this thread, i just need my data not trying to open a dr store.

Maxtor : a local technician took a swift look at the inside in a clean room, a "white" central ring appears on the up platter, is still there any hope please ? the drive says to be a "CALYPSO" to mhdd.
