Yesterday I accidentally step on the power cord of my Lacie 500gig external hdd, causing it to "crash" both literally and figuratively.

The drive is not showing up on Windows explorer (W.E. is now also taking a along time to load), but if I go to "unplug hardware from computer" it is showing that there is a mass storage drive that I can "turn off".

The other issue with the drive that is obvious is that when I plug it into power, the power light ALWAYS stays on. I can't seem to turn off the HDD (even with repeated pressing of the off button).


So my question is .... where should I start? What software tools may be helpful in fixing this? Is there anything that i can do physically to the drive right now that my solve the problem? (I have looked inside the HDD (took cover off) and all appears normal, with no sign of electrical burning).

If you need your data, stop!

You need to correctly diagnose a problem and then start ressolving that problem.

Openning a drive by unexperienced person usualy causing more problems, very expensive problems.

It depends on what lid you took off If you opened the LaCie case, and saw a hard drive inside, that's fine. If you take that hard drive, and remove the cover, it's BAD news. As long as you have the cover off, why not take the drive out completely, and connect it directly inside a desktop computer? That's where I'd start.
