Does this drive will be pain in the a** when comes to swapping platters due to the plates between the platters? Those plates are for reducing vibration and help airflow I guess?
How many platters on 750GB and 1TB? Does anyone know?

Why do u need to did a platter swap???? Its not normal FDB Problems on WD, so if u did a platter swap because u hdd its knocking or its not detected correctly surely, u lost alignment and lost data

Actually, I'm not trying to do platter swap or anything like that.
I'm just planning to get a new hard drive and wanna know it's limitation before regretting later down the line.
I read it in this forum that the 32MB cache Seagate HDD also has such plate. And people saying this becomes obstruction when trying to do platter swap. So, is this the same case with WD HDD?
I'm really interested to purchase this HDD with 32MB cache. Because I have 2 & 8MB HDD, and I can feel the BIG performance difference.

Any comments regarding my questions?

I have 16 750's that have been running continuously
since nov of last year. I haven't had any problems with
them at all , but that doesn't mean that they won't fail
tomorrow ..The fact is : ANY brand is subject to failure.
and Any brand has just as good a chance of lasting several
years.
AND Any Brand with huge capacity is going to be a pain
when it comes to Data recovery. SO : Keep good backups
of important data

Here's what I don't want to happen.
Let's say (hope not), DR company said HDD failed and needs to do platter swap, but due to the plates we can't recover your data.
OR,
Due to the plates, that'll cost you $3000 (instead of $1000 HDD with no plates). Because it's very difficult task and bla bla bla... don't wanna hear the rest.

Don't misunderstand that I want to or going to do platter swap and all that.
I don't have the tools and knowledge about it. End of story.
Basically, just a precaution. Is that bad actually?

No company should undetake any work you dont approve of so a definitive diagnostic can be given by a professional, and you choose a DR company based on reputation, size, and experience in the market, then you have a good chance of getting all your data recovered. You choose a small DR outfit who operate from the backroom of a PC shop then you will likely not get your data.

There are many experienced and skilled engineers here, choose one and I am sure they will be willing to help you, and you will be able to tell just how exprienced and skilled based on posts made displaying obvious knowledge inthe field.

And as for the price, well you get what you pay for. DR is not easy, it is time consuming, it is difficult, it often requires the use of specialised equipment and tools, and many times requires the use of spare parts, and this is the reason you will not get your data recovered for $100, and the reason why anyone offering it for an extremely low price is not likley to have these tools, parts, knowledge and skills.

You want to be sure your data is in good hands, make sure it goes to a professional!

I read this kinda post WAY to many times in this forum and gonna make me puke.

Again, what I want to do is to get a new HDD that won't cost me a lot to recover "THAN THE OTHER ONES". My choice is only 2, with plates or without.
Simple as that.

Personally I would get a Seagate or Samsung 750GB/1TB, these are with plates but the performance of both drives is pretty good, though the Seagate do seem to get motor failure a lot. Samsung are generally cheaper, and as far as DR goes, both are relatively easier than the WD to recover, even with the spacers.

Personally I would get smaller drives, no more thant 320 GB. , invest in EXCELLENT power supply and move to DVDs what is not necessary on-line on drives. Also a streming tape would not be a bad idea. Somewhat slow, but extremely reliable. I use small drives , I have donors and firmware for everything (just in case... ), regular backup on streaming tape and make DVDs on monthly basis. Never had problems or headaches.

Smart Move, can never be too careful i always say!

P.S. and I usually change the HDDs , even if they are perfectly in health and working order, every two years - keeping them for non-critical storage after complete recertification and selfscan. More than this....

Exactly what I was thinking. I want 320 single platter with 32MB cache SATA2 interface. But WD doesn't have such product.
Does anyone know any other brand which has it?

How big would that platter be? Like the size of an LP or vinyl record? The arm would be the size of a tennis racket? Probably easy enough to swap the head though. What size screw driver would you need?
