Software or hardware ? you mean imaging or logical recovery or repair of damaged HDDs ? What do you do in your "lab" ? Provide a little more info !!

I can say first hand because my company is going through this now: it's a never ending money PIT

buy one software/HW today, and you'll realize you need another tomorrow. Buy one SW/HW today for a specific job, and you'll realize that job takes so long you'll need to buy another to run two in parallel....

Spend 1 month reading all posts here and you'll come out with some good names/ideas to try. Buy original versions and help the cause!

:D Amazing to see so many kind faces! Thanks to everybody!

I have several coworkers in the lab studyting together about the different features and functions, we focus on the spiders, bat, butterfly, ants. This is a group of interest. We have a large database recording their periodic behaviours and many other data. It happened not long ago one of our computers get crashed, we had to find a third party data recovery company to help with our data retrieval. It cost me 400usd. They said my computer was attacked by virus and the head is not stable, but i am really not good at this, who knows the real reason!

I want to know if there are some tool or software which can retrieve data easily, better it can have some Auto detection function to judge the malfunction areas and then others won't fool me, also this tool can solve malfunctions both logically and physically, this is very important, because we decide to do all the data recovery jobs by ourselves, not by others to protect our data. I am searching for knowledge if this line and hope to know more about this.

So, this is my situation, can any one suggest?

There is a very good tool available. It can recover data almost completely from most disasters.

It's called a backup.

I mentioned this to another fellow, but it didn't go over too well. Hopefully you have more wisdom. :) In a business or scientific environment, a proper backup is critical. If I ran a research facility, and the person responsible for the computers never set up a proper backup plan, I'd likely fire him/her immediately. Data Recovery is a last resort. Not all drives can be recovered, even by the absolute best in the business. To rely on data recovery instead of a proper backup is a foolish and expensive proposition.

To make it more clear, there is NO single tool available that can easily recover data. If Data Recovery was an easy thing, the recovery companies wouldn't charge $3000+ for recoveries. It is an extremely technical field, requiring a lot of very expensive tools, years of experience, good eyes, a steady hand, and plenty of luck. Despite what some think, Data Recovery is not a simple program to run, any more than a single pill can cure every ailment you could have (A pill that sets a broken arm? I'd love to see that :)

To make it even more personal and direct, maybe you could find a program that can do research on spiders, crickets, and other insects. Employees are expensive. What's needed is a simple program that both physically analyze, categorize, theorize, and in every other manner do what the employees are doing. That way you could fire everyone in your department, saving a great deal of money. It would be great if this program was also Shareware, for only $29.95.

Hi Rchadwick,

Thanks very much for your reply, i agree with what you said, backup can be the best tool for data protection. It's really a matter of good habit to do this. I just want to learn more about the data recovery field in case i lose my backup.

The more i learn about data recovery, the more i am interested in it, especially i can see deeper how the data was stored in the drives.

However, i will remember your suggestion, thanks again!

I agree 100% with the backup advice. Even those that DO have good backups, have seriously flawed backup strategies and/or equipment. Focus your thoughts and energy there. That's probably the best advice for all with such concerns. Honestly, I have to say that even the most educated and multi-talented person has a tremendous amount of reading, studying, and practice (many many hours ongoing...) with nearly each case being uniquely different in a multitude of ways, AND tons of expensive hardware is a prerequisite to doing any of the work correctly. Basically, what I'm saying is that you'd have to quit your studies, take up these, and spend tens of thousands of dollars, for what? To POSSIBLY be able to recover your data from a potential hard drive failure because you didn't have a backup? Perhaps you are simply asking for opinions on the best software for recovering data from simple logical problems? Wait..no i just re-read your post, and you are clearly asking for both physical and logical recovery (of which there are many many books for each family and many tools as well)...I'd say that you'd have to spend roughly 20k-30k USD minimum right away, just to get started with a PC3000, good imager, and flow bench and few other necessities. Seriously. So, I've never done a recovery for $400. Not ever. That's cheap. Even 3k is cheap....considering what it'd cost you to do yourself. Anyway, it wouldn't make economic sense...and statistically, the odds are against you needing routine DR. especially with descent backup equipment and strategy.

Google is really a nice hand making me learn Data recovery has two kinds of situations:

Logical recovery and physical recovery, the following are some common features of Data Loss to be shared with everybody:

Logical data loss:

Partition Loss, file deletion, password loss, virus attack, formatted drive, etc.

Physical Data Loss:

Inaccessible Drive, firmware corruption, clicking, physical damage on sectors, read failure after head swap, single head damage, etc.

:?: I am not sure if there are some other causes to data loss, hope we can discuss together and i am willing to hear your suggestions. I think these causes can help me to better protect my computers and data in the drives.

???????? Choose best data recovery software ???????

I feel like watching a game where someone started with one question and after
the first replies a computer questioning program takes over to ask the prepared
questions.

Never ending theorizing, leading to nowhere, just loosing time.....

Hi falther,

This is not a machine type of job to ask these questions, just want to figure out the best solution for me and for those with the same situations with me. There are two many data recovery software and tool providers, who knows what are the best. I can only look for help from those ever used them.

i was recommended to try winhex, easy recovery, final data, R-studio, etc. but i really don't know which is better and what's the difference. Maybe backup is my only choice.

Active@ Undelete is one of my favorites for recovering simple things like accidentally deleted files.

However, we use so much software that it's really not funny. Professional grade software has capability to work with disk images.

Anyway, backups are cheaper. Hard drives fail every day and with no warning. You must assume that today is when your hard drive will die. You must have a plan to be prepared for ANY of your hard drives to die. If you don't have such a plan, and you haven't tested it, you will be calling us and it costs a lot.

I've got a number of software tools for recovering data. Some are good in certain situations, and others work better in others. That's why I have more than one. None of them can fix physical problems. It's like asking what tool is best for working on cars. A brain is the first needed tool. After that, it depends on what cars you're working on, what you want to do (Tune ups, brakes, mufflers, engines, etc), and then you have to decide how deep you're going to go. If you've ever peeked in a good mechanic's toolbox, you'll see hundreds if not thousands of tools filling a huge tool chest. If you ask him what's the best tool to buy for working on cars, he's going to look at you the way we are looking at you.

I don't understand the aversion to making a backup. For most businesses, it's a regular part of life. It can be cheap, easy, and nearly transparent. Data Recovery is extremely expensive, not always successful, and you may be without your data for a while. Listen to me, THIS IS WHAT PEOPLE DO. THEY BACK UP! Only fools would select data recovery over a backup. Frankly, most DR customers are former idiots. You hear the stories... "I know, I'm an idiot. I didn't make a backup". Thing is, they learn, and start making backups (Or at least intend to).

If you really insist on 'doing your own recoveries', and want to know what tool to get, you'll need to get them all.

I don't know how to say it so it's understood, so I think I'll give up here. I hope you're not doing anything important, like finding the cure to cancer. Best of luck to you.

wiseleo just gave me that valuable suggestions, i am very much appreciated!
"Hard drives fail every day and with no warning. You must assume that today is when your hard drive will die. You must have a plan to be prepared for ANY of your hard drives to die.">>>>> This frightens me a lot. I have 12 computers in my lab and each of them contained important data of our researches. We are so busy and sometimes even if we made the plan, we may forget or while we are in the process of something, the power is cut off suddenly and some data can be lost as well. So i must find a good DR 'tool' to work with the back up. Then we will not worry about anything.

SKYUnlimited,

Data Loss is a serisous problem everyone has to face. Why storage your data not only your harddisk but also DVD,Sever,Tape or other medium?

I hope I could be the Rain Man. he stored everything in his brain. That's cool.

Sorry, but the way you bring this "back-up" plan thing is always the same way. Haha.

I guess, if you wanna help someone then you should "answer" the problem or question a.k.a "to the point".
Not like "you should've... ... ..." or "in the first place... ... ...".
I don't think that will be helpful for the people who ALREADY have the problem, ain't it?

In this case, this dude wanna know the best data recovery software.
The answer should be some data recovery software, but "back-up" plan.
If you don't wanna give the answer, there's no need to participate in the thread. (oops, that's me haha. Sorry to the thread starter, but I can't help to post this "off the original topic" =P)
