Hello everyone, I'm new here, I was just wondering if anyone out there can help me out figure if my spare hard drive is just a bit paper weight or if theres a possiblity to fix it?, I have an 80Gig Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 ATA/133 HDD, my problem is that bios can detect it but windows can't, I tried using various hdd tools but non of them can repair it, its giving me an error when I try to low level format it, something to do with cannot write to disk or cannot detect mbr, and instead of the usual 80.2gig, its registring as 81.2gig, I've tried using partition magic, partition table doctor, HDD low level format tool, I tried connecting it as primary, as secondary disk drive, tried using it as slave and master, even tried using it on an external via usb, I can hear the disk si spinning correctly, its just that it either windows nor linux can access or detect the drive, I appreciate any assistance. thanks

Hello,

If you need the data, don't try any formatting tools!
Linux can you show the problem in the dmesg.

If you need the drive:
Simple drop it to a trash, and buy a new one.
It is only waste of time....

Regards,
Janos

Or you can alternatively use details about your company in your every post -must be offtopic.

BTW, congratulations for the 1000 posts. Your are now one of the top 2 posters. :)

@Dmitriy
I never understood, why most of this spammer breed is related with SALVATIONDATA somehow. Wheather they are current, or used to be the past reseller of salvations. Isn't it a nice co-incidence?

OMG... I suck at posting  Sigh...

I am not sure if these "Handlers" are related to Salvationdata (I only noticed their possible connection to Vogon/Ontrak). However, I must admit that Salvationdata was the true leader when it comes to spamming HDD Guru forums. :)

I don't need the data inside, I was just wondering if it can be repaired, really not sure if its a hardware issue, or data issue, if this thing can be fix, I can still put it to good use, like installing it on my old xbox or assemble a pc for charity,

If no physical damage, only firmware issue and need to be fixed and recertified, yes, it is possible. But it's not worth the money. The value for a used 80GB Maxtor DM here is about 10 EUR... and to do the job special equipment is required that cost... yes, you know. Ask if anyone can fix it in your area for a reasonable amount, need to be analysed, eventually firmware fixed and SS , assuming the mechanic is in good conditions.

OK Gang,

I'm a newbie on the board. I do know about storage, takes me back to IBM 305 RAMAC so don't even try to give me a hard time. ...so far I've discovered that this site is pretty controversial and I'm not up to it. Give me advice or stay out!

I would like to use it myself, I do charity in other ways. Had all my torrent indices (no big loss, can rebuild them) and some other data which being an external may not be important. N.C. may be rich, ...$180 does hit my pocket. External [b]will become impotant because of BACKUP -- intending to use DRIVEIMAGE, don't like Noton Ghost or the way they replaced it).

So I do get the "9/10/2008 5:04:15 PM Format error ocurred at offset 77,210,220,186" (...or something like that -- am running it on my laptop for at least the last 6 days.

Hmmmm, not exactly!

But i have learned this at the early years, don't use >2 year drives on important place, additionally, don't use at all any buggy drive.

All harddrive will fail sooner or later.
...with different and maybe strange issues.... :|

Trust me, don't waste your time, and your data....

will help me, it's now 7 days and I am at 85,470,420,166. This is going to take some more time, I have 11 blue bars on the "Current task progress" bar.
