Hi there - I've a drive that's recently gone bad. Using my massive powers of deduction, I reckon the problem's most likely related to the popped chip and large scorch-mark on the logic board. No idea hwy this happened - shall be verifying my PSU at the first available opportunity.
Anyhow, I'm working on the basis that the disk is basically ok, other than for the dead logic board. Obviously the easiest solution would be a new logic board - but I can't find one for an acceptable price. I do, however, have some other Fujitsu drives, and was wondering if I should attempt to swap the platter. I would be annoyed to lose the data, but not heart-broken (it was only the system drive - no personal docs) - and I'm certainly not spending a lot on it.
The drive in question is a Fujitsu MAU3036NP (specs here -
http://193.128.183.41/home/v3__product. ... =fsp&wg=17). The possible donor is a MAP3367NP (specs here -
http://193.128.183.41/home/v3__product.asp?pid=330).
As can be seen in the specs, there are some obvious differences between the two drives, but a fair few similarities. So, I was basically just wondering what are my chances of putting the plattter in the donor drive, and expecting it to work for 20mins or so whilst I clone off the data?
Skill-wise, I am heavily involved in computers, and have repaired most things at various times. I've yet to dismantle a hard-drive, though (for any reason other than seeing what's inside, that is), and don't know much about the internals.
Thanks for any thoughts...
