Hello,

I recently powered up a Maxtor 80GB internal IDE HDD to get some data off of it and it is not working (BIOS does not see it). After looking on the forums, I believe my issue is PCB related (when powering up the drive there was an electrical burning smell coming from the drive). When power is applied to the drive the CPU chip gets very hot also. While there are no physical signs of damage, I believe something on the board is fried.

I want to purchase a replacement PCB before sending the drive off to a data recovery company but I am having trouble matching all info to make sure I have the right PCB.

Relevant info:
Model: 6Y080L0
Ardent C8-C1
040111300
SMOOTH L7250E 1.2
F4FYA

I see references to codes beginning with "YAR..." but i do not see that anywhere on the HDD. I have attached pictures with all relevant info. Any info would be appreciated so I can get the drive operational again.

The replacement PCBs I am looking at are:

1. http://cgi.ebay.com/Maxtor-DiamondMax-Plus-9-80-GB-80GB-6Y080L-6Y080L0-PCB_W0QQitemZ330280464004QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item330280464004&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

2. http://www.softcom.com.my/maxtor_f8fya.htm

Will either one work, or am I missing some information?

Thanks

I just found a post from here:

http://forum.hddguru.com/howto-how-replace-maxtor-calypso-iii-board-t5977.html?hilit=f4fya

That stated the following:

All of these:

F4FYA
L6FYA
M6FYA......are fully compatible....!!!

So with that thought I should actually be looking at this PCB to replace my F4FYA......

http://www.softcom.com.my/maxtor_l6fya.htm

Does that sound correct?

70% you'll fry the new pcb, but is worth a try. Nothing to loose except the cost of a new pcb. Can't stop DIY'ers damaging theirselves, if drive knocks or makes a grinding sound, well... Time for a pro or trash it.

I was able to get a replacement board from a local computer shop. The drive spun up and I was able to boot off of the disk successfully.

Thanks for the replies.
