What happend: I mixed the powercable from my laptop to my external HDD.

So my HDD got 19v, 3.42A instead of 12Vcd, 2A as it should have, so its broken now. It wont start..
The specification is at the pictures ive posted:

All the photos and texts is priceless for me so if anyone know how to repair it i will appriciate it alot

My theory is that the discs are okay, but the steeringcard had to much power and broke. So maybe i can replace it if i find an exacly the same kind och HDD and swap the steeringcards, if its possible?

/Freddy

It should be this one wich is burned? in that case, where do i find an identical one most likely? Ebay? WD company?

Japp, bor i Umeå

Edit: ive taken out the HDD out of its external casing, and tried it as an internal HDD in a home computer, without any results, still dead.

unscrew the board, flip it over and post a GOOD picture of the area around the power connector. if your data is so important though the best way is with a pro.

I recommend Bosse (mr_spokk) from Sweden. You need him to transfer the ROM from your burnt board to a good one, and extract your data.

I know for a fact he's done loads of these successfully, and you need Pro help.

Cheers

Sean

How proficient are you with a soldering iron and a multimeter?

Well, if you're curious, you can search for TVS on here. However, it won't be terribly helpful if you can't test components with a multimeter, or replace them with a soldering iron.

I could explain things more, but that would just lead to more questions, and more questions. What I'm really saying is, unless if you know what you're doing, it will take an unrealistic amount of hand-holding. What I'm also saying is, I'm not holding hands. An adventurous soul can search for TVS, but it's a solo journey.

mr_spokk, can you please elaborate? What do you mean? :)
I can clearly see 2xTVS (D5, D6) on the third picture

Freddy,

Due to the above reason you mentioned, you should send it to a pro. Pro can save your trouble and worries. I don't doubt your capacibility to manage this case by some hints from gurus here. But it is too risky for you.

If you want to play and practise , please don't do it on this one, some non-crucial data drives.

Regards

Laura

Hi guy's, sorry for the harsh criticism...hope I've not offend anyone!
But I've rarely seen a WD suffer from TSV problems, even after a current spike or wrong current inserted.

On the other hand I've quite often seen numerous of Seagate drives suffer of TSV problems...

Best Regards
Bosse
