Hi,

I have a Maxtor 2B020H1 drive, it was pretty defective, so I repaiered the Firmware. In the bios it was detected as Maxtor Athena, now its detected right.

But I cant format the drive by using the Windows XP Cd-Rom, I ve tried to low level format the drive, but it didnt get better...

I also tried to format the drive with SeaTolls, but at 49% my pc hang, after a while SeaTools said, "failed".

Could you help me please, I need this drive for an old PC :)

Thanks a lot and sorry for my bad English (Im from Germany).

If you have repaired the firmware chances are the disk will identify correctly but not be accessible normally. Explain in more detail how the disk was fixed, maybe there is a step you missed? Data is obviously not important so no reason why HD cant be refurbished and work again.

Personally for the cost of a 20GB HD, and the hassle of doing this work, I would get a new HD.

Hi,

I got the HDD as defective from an PC Shop.

The first time i tried put it in my pc it was detected as Athena, so i got the program from salvationdata and repaired the firmware. it was detected correctly.

I also tried to boot my pc with this drive as second hdd and it worked, before (as it was detected as Athena) it didnt, so I was happy :)

Then I wanted to partition the drive with the windows cd, it also worked, but i couldnt format the drive, xp said the drive was defective.
Yesterday I downloaded your low level format program and formatted the drive, but it didnt get better.

Now I cant partition the drive with the CD, xp says that the drive was defective...

I also cant access the SMART things, but with Seatools is could access them...

I think that SD products are designed primarily with data recovery in mind, not repairing hard disks so that they can be used again. I use PC3000, and I know that this has the relevant options to repair correctly.

I am not a user of SD for maxtor, maybe someone can clarify this??

MHDD is unable to fix firmware. It is a utility to test the operational state of a HDD, it cannot repair faults.

someone has misled you im afraid.

With the full salvation suite this would not be a problem, but it sounds like the original poster is using the freeware utility for this specific drive.

Honestly, yeah, throw it out and buy a new hard drive... this one has already proven itself to be defective.

if the data is not important why waste your time trying to fix the disk? the disk is well past it's sell by date. throw it away. the firmware failed as a result of other problems with the disk, usually degraded media, overfilling of g list.

I can fix it completely if the surface is "not too degraded" (unlikely) .... but it's not worth.
P.S. you have done everything possible with freely available tools. Why bother with a 20GB , 9 years old maybe HDD ?

place the disk on ebay. you could make $20. recovery companies always looking for spare parts.

I would keep experimenting. Once you know how to do it you will be better at this task. Having the data as "not important" allows you take experiment more. If it works, great. If not then who gives a Sh*t.
