I have two Maxtor disks which do not spin at all after power damage.
I would like to start them to be able to extract data. Therefore I hope that I can get some hints here, as I presume that problem lies in PCBs.
Both PCBs do not have visible burned components, tracks, etc. I can not get exatly same boards here. Tried ebay and got completely different boards.

Also basic measuring, components swapping or replacing did not produce any success.
I replaced all rds035 fet's and bsp100 with new, also all capacitors and 78l08.
Is there any usual, or most common component that dies during power surge?
Is maybe something inside disk? What to look for?

These are markings on disks:

The power surge was powerful... in any case if the 7808 was damaegd, you likely have killed preamp INSIDE the HDA. Well... how much $$$ is the data worth ? Especially for ATHENA , less for the NIKE, even a headstack change is a pain in the ass because of adaptives problem. A tough game even for skilled people.

Personally, I wouldn't 'Shotgun Troubleshoot' (Replace everything) a drive's PCB. Pull out a multimeter and check stuff. Especially check resistors with a 0 on them.

Do either of the drives spin up when one of the non-compatible boards is connected?

If yes then chances are greater with just a PCB problem. If it does not power then their is a good chance the preamp or the the heads are fried.

There is a risk of messing the donor PCB completely if pre-amp is dead or shorting

Thank you for quick replies.
As I can not have exactly same boards to try and had bad luck with ebay, I started to replace all components which could be dead with proven new ones.
I haven't said that all of them originally failed, but just that I canged them anyway, to be sure. (Felt desperately.)
If the data can be extracted it would be great. Some family photos and videos, but nothing so special worth paying thousands to recover.
What really worries me is what can be burned that I can not find it for days. Is it the same with you, when you can't sleep until you succeed?
Of course I could trash away these disks, and I will, but oly when I discover what is causing motor not to spindle.

A burned circuit caused by power surge. Now you can sleep...
P.s. At present and assuming you won't experiment more, a data recovery won't cost so much. Not in the 50 eur, anyway. Hope the hsa is not killed.
