Just a guess, but I suspect most people with information to offer might be more willing to do this in private.

Personally, I don't have any problems sharing with those that share. However, I don't think it would be quite fair to discuss and share trade secrets in an open forum. Someone will come along and take the techniques. That same person may develop something on their own, and then keep it a secret. They wind up with an advantage over me because I was nice.

The best analogy I can think of might be one of sharing naked pictures of yourself. You might share a picture of yourself with someone in private, especially if they are willing to share one with you. You certainly don't want it posted on the Internet for all to see. To use the analogy more, I don't mind sharing pictures with clothes on, or maybe on occasion one with less clothes on, but the goodies aren't for everyone.

That being said, it really would be nice if there was such a place to share the goodies privately....

:?:

I agree... trade secrets don't necessarily need to be searchable by google.

Personally, I agree with rchadwick. We cant spend our days working long and hard finding solutions to problems then giving it away in an open forum with nothing in return. The DR industry is the way it is for a reason. If everyone posted everything they knew then we would all be out of work, would-be customers would be attempting everything themselves 'because they read it in a forum', and nobody would spend any time researching and developing solutions and we would all loose out.

I agree with what you are saying, I also want to learn from the gurus here, but appreciate that earning knowledge here comes from respect, and what you put into it, and knowing the right questions to ask, who to ask them, and when to ask.

Helpdisc, you better watch out your attitude towards fellow forum members. I personally would not share anything with you since you only take not give.

The idea is a good one. To get together to discuss a common problem we all need a solution to. But in reality, it is such a difficult problem, and common, that anyone willing to give away a good solution is effectively helping the competition and is not good for business.

There is a difference in helping somebody, and giving away everything your bread and butter is based on.

Maybe these discussions should be completed behind closed doors.

This is like open-source versus regular software. There's just a difference of opinion. Some believe that if you open up what you are doing than others can make it better and all together the industry can get better as a whole. Then others believe the opposite. Not gonna be settled here I believe. I don't think you're getting what you're looking for here (unless like everyone says, it's in private)

Actually Helpdisc, I was suggesting the conversation be taken private. It seems you're open to starting a conversation where those who don't know how to do it can talk about it, although I suspect your little fantasy was to offer the topic, and all the old timers would sit around and spill their secrets for your enjoyment. Personally, I thought it would be helpful for more knowledgable people, those with more puzzle pieces, to discuss this. It seems you wouldn't want to be a part of that, and I now agree with you. In hindsight, I probably have enough puzzle pieces, and it's taken a lot of time and effort to gather them. Best of luck with your 'blind leading the blind' conversation.
