I have two of these drives; unfortunately I don't have the donor drive in front of me at the moment. I do know that the model numbers are equal only in the first 7 positions (WD800JD) and that the donor drive is about 1 year older than the patient and further, the donor drive works fine. Patient manufactured 26 July 2007 and makes no unusual noises like clicking, etc.

Anyhow, the patient drive is a WD800JD-22MSA1
DCM = HSBAYTJAA
LBA = 15630 1488
PCB = 2060-701335-005 REV A
Bar Code sticker = 2061 701335 E00 AM XW 3C27 AGXK 7 0002040 8042

The patient drive would not spin up due to the burnt chip. I swapped the PCB board from donor to patient and it spins up fine. However, PC BIOS reports a "generic" name for the drive, and Windows will not boot.

From messages I've already read here and on other forums, I believe I need to swap (or re-program) a "ROM type" chip on the donor board so that it matches the same chip on the fried patient board. I also understannd that this chip may be labeled as U12. Is this all I need to do/worry about?? Any of the above numbers important to match so that the PCB swap will have a better chance of being successful???

Thanks for any info/advice/comments of whether I'm heading in the right direction. I'm VERY new to all this.

Regards

Boo
